This is a really exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join the Bexley MSK team as an advanced practice / extended scope physiotherapist specialising in persistent pain. The successful candidate will be a Physiotherapist working at a very senior level who is ready to take the next step of working at an extended scope / advanced practice level.

The Bexley MSK Service is an assessment, triage and treatment service which receives referrals from Bexley borough GPs who may otherwise have directed the same referrals to secondary care. Patients are seen in a clinic setting within the borough and are given a full assessment and treatment as required on first appointment. The post holder will work as an integral part of this team responding to the needs of the service and its stakeholders and taking a leading role in team developments and day to day running of the department.

Main duties of the job

Expertise in the assessment of patients referred with Complex chronic/persistent pain will be essential: as well as the triage of these patients, The post holder will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team working alongside psychology and nursing colleagues to provide holistic care from a biopsychosocial perspective to patients with chronic/persistent pain. This will include facilitation on the RESTORE pain management programme

The post holder will play a key role in discussion with GPs and stakeholders regarding their training, development, communication with the service and provision of specific training for both GPs, consultants and MSK staff.

The pathway enables a whole system approach for patients referred for Musculoskeletal management and enable streamlined, expert management of conditions in the right place, first time. The successful applicants will provide specialist opinions on the management of patients with persistent pain and will also assist the management team in service development. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has enthusiasm for working in persistent pain and wants to work as a team alongside physiotherapists, psychologists and nurses. The team takes a whole-person approach and seeks to support each patient according to their unique biological, psychological and social needs.

To work autonomously as an extended scope physiotherapist in providing musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy treatment to patients within the Bexley community, through application of research, best practice, and evidence-based care.

To facilitate, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the RESTORE group pain management programme.

To promote an environment of learning and development for stakeholders referring to the service and to lead the promotion of the service to the wider population (GPs, commissioners, consultants).

To influence, create and promote models of practice which offer a continuum of care and equality for access and during care.

To provide expert clinical delivery of a specialist physiotherapy service within the multidisciplinary team as an autonomous practitioner, ensuring the highest possible standards of practice.

To demonstrate expert knowledge in the triage, assessment, and treatment of patients with complex and ongoing pain and MSK complaints and pathologies.

To assist with co-ordination, organization and running of specialist services.

To manage a defined caseload using evidence based/client centred principals to assess/plan/implement and evaluate and record interventions.

Leading in the innovative development of Extended Scope Practitioner [ESP] skills within the Adults MSK service as an ESP, using advanced skills to triage and take responsibility and management of a complex caseload of MSK pain patients.

To provide a high level of clinical expertise, as an autonomous practitioner, exemplifying good practice in assessment/treatment/ management of MSK conditions and specialism in the remit of pain management.

To be able to unravel the complexity of the impact of pain and identify which blending of therapies are required to address both the psychological and physical effects of pain.

To demonstrate highly advanced theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and utilise highly developed clinical reasoning skills to accurately determine clinical diagnosis and prognosis in a wide range of mixed and complicated conditions.

To support the operational aspects of the musculoskeletal physiotherapy service and take a lead role as required by the service and lead clinician in service specialist projects/developments with support from the Clinical Team Lead.

To be an active member of the weekend working rota.

To carry out other duties commensurate with the grade in line with the requirements of the post as agreed by the Clinical Lead for the Adults MSK Team.
