Job summary

This is a unique opportunity for someone with very good experience working with people with communication impairments including working with ASD, learning disabilities and other special needs, to join the Speech and Language Therapy Team on a fixed term contract.

As a member of the Learning Disabilities Speech & Language Therapy Service, you will be supporting the delivery of high-quality Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention to people with Learning Disabilities and their carers in order to improve health and well-being and prevent ill-health.

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to the delivery of high-quality speech and language therapy assessment, diagnosis and intervention to people with a Learning Disability and their carers including both communication and dysphagia/swallowing support and health improvement.
  • To analyse the need for, develop and produce easy read/accessible information appropriate to the individual service user's health and communication needs to improve their health and well-being.
  • To be involved in specialist multi-disciplinary assessment (including gathering and analysing case history information) and care packages.
  • To identify, develop and deliver training packages appropriate to the audience need.
  • To identify, develop and implement therapy resources and low-tech communication aids (e.g. communication passports, photo resources, symbol timetables, visual topic boards etc.) following clinical assessment, which involves making judgements about what is required, appropriate and achievable.
  • To manage own clinical caseload including creating care plans with oversight from experienced SLTs.
  • To use good word processing skills to create accessible information resources. To be able to use specialist software packages to programme communication aids and to create symbol resources.
  • To independently programme and edit different software packages used in high tech communication voice output devices and iPad apps.
