Job summary

The post holder will offer assessment, consultation and short-term intervention for mental health service users who also use substances within the borough acute and crisis pathway by offering joint work with service users, ward team, care co-ordinator or named professional.

The post holder will support the aim to deliver a high quality, time limited assessment and brief intervention service that enables clients of the service to achieve optimal functioning in the community. Intervention will be delivered within an integrated Motivational Interviewing approach that is person centred and holistic; providing assessments and support for families and/or carers, working collaboratively with, and appropriately referring to, other Oxleas and substance misuse services.

Main duties of the job

  • To develop and enhance communication and information sharing between Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and Substance Misuse Service Providers about COMHAD related acute admissions.
  • Strengthen joint working protocols between Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and Substance Misuse Services in relation to discharge planning
  • Increase the engagement with Substance Misuse Services of those people with drug and alcohol dependence who are currently inpatients on mental health acute wards.
  • Reduce the number of repeated mental health acute admissions relating to substance misuse.
  • Reduce the overall reliance on acute mental health beds where substance misuse has contributed to the reason for the admission
  • Improve the health and social care pathway for dual diagnosis service users by enhancing engagement with appropriate services
  • Offer consultation to all Oxleas mental health teams in the Bromley acute, crisis and liaison mental health services.

  • RMN, RGN, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist qualification and current registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development

Desirable

  • Additional Drug and alcohol qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a Mental Health or Drug and Alcohol setting.
  • Previous drug and alcohol experience.

Desirable

  • Experience of high levels of working both independently and in a team setting.

Skills/Knowldege

Essential

  • A clear understanding of the needs and difficulties of people who experience co-occurring mental health, alcohol and drug difficulties
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to teach practical substance management skills to service users
