Job summary

Senior Specialist Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry

The post holder will be Section 12 registered and appointed to a full-time, 10 PA role, providing cover for HMP Exeter (0.7) and HMP Guys Marsh (0.3) mental health services. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the Clinical Director and Service Manager to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder and agree the formal job plan. The job plan will be reviewed at least annually thereafter.

The overall split of the programmed activities is 8 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2 to Supporting Professional Activities. The timetable is indicative only and will be reviewed. The SPA time available will allow achieving appraisal and revalidation requirements for the GMC and meeting PDP objective.

There are no out of hours on-call associated with this post. The post holder is expected to be Section 12(2) approved and will be expected to renew this approval according to agreed procedures.

Main duties of the job

Clinical work - HMP Exeter & HMP Guys Marsh

  • assessing prisoners in the houseblocks and in healthcare
  • liaising with services outside the prison to arrange CPAs, aftercare plans or transfers to hospital
  • attending the inpatient unit to manage psychiatric cases.
  • any other care which could reasonably be expected of a senior psychiatrist acting in an in-reach capacity in a prison
  • providing out-patient clinics as required
  • quality improvement initiatives, to be agreed with multidisciplinary colleagues and the service managers.

Job responsibilities

This post-holder will have his or her base at HMP Exeter and HMP Guys Marsh for the allocated PAs, where the mental health services comprise a full multidisciplinary team, including mental health practitioners, occupational therapists, Support Time and Recovery workers, and a psychology team, supported by administration and a service manager.

The post holder will be expected to provide senior medical input to the team, as described elsewhere in the job description. They will also be expected to participate in local leadership meetings and work with local operational leads and the Clinical Director on service development and the improvement of quality of services locally.

Attend team meetings, support the triage function of the team, support the duty workers with urgent clinical situations, undertake new patient reviews, including completing formulations and risk assessments for these patients, be available for clinical discussions with team members about patients on the team caseload, hold follow up reviews of patients within the case load.

Take a lead in the management of complex cases and provide clinical leadership of team.

The postholder would be encouraged to undertake the AC status course.
