HMP Rochester, a Category C male prison
Rochester prison has about 750 sentenced inmates, mainly aged from 21 to about 30, but a small proportion is 18 - 21 years of age. The prisoners have multiple needs, including developmental problems, personality vulnerability, substance misuse and emerging psychosis.
The in-reach service comprises a full multidisciplinary team, with mental health practitioners, Support Time and Recovery workers, a psychologist and a team secretary. There is a psychology-led day service, the Bradley Therapy Centre, which offers a group programme and IAPT services.
HMP Maidstone, a Category C male prison
Around 600 men live at HMP Maidstone in a mixture of single and shared rooms. There are 4 main residential house blocks and one segregation unit. Prisoners present with a wide range of clinical conditions, including acute and chronic mental illness, personality disorder and ADHD. Within the stepped care model, the Maidstone service screens about 10 referrals per week.
The in-reach team holds a caseload of about 20-30. New assessments are normally slotted into prearranged out-patient Clinics if the new assessments are generated from the referral system. All referrals are triaged by the In-Reach Team. On rare occasions, assessments are requested as an emergency from the wings or segregation unit. This is variable but on average once a week.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties of post holder, 8 PAs
The post holder will be eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register in Forensic Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry and willprovide Consultant leadership for the In-Reach teams at HMP Rochester with 4PAs DCC and HMP Maidstone 2PAs DCC.
In addition, the post holder would be expected to contribute to an aspect of quality assurance. 2 SPAs will be allocated in the job plan for undertaking activities that support the professional role such as teaching, training, clinical management, clinical governance, service development, research, and other relevant activities.
The post includes an interesting and varied range of clinical responsibilities for prisoners with a wide range of clinical conditions, including acute and chronic mental illness, personality disorder and ADHD. The in-reach team holds a caseload and within this caseload, number of patients would be subject to CPA management.
The post holder would be provided with training in Rio and System One, which is used by healthcare in prison within the Trust.
