Perioperative Fellow Post

Queen Victoria Hospital are offering a perioperative fellow post for 12 months, or 6 months if can be attached to a 6-month SIA at QVH. This post would be suitable for a registrar during stage 3 of the curriculum who would like to experience and develop their perioperative medicine skills.

QVH anaesthetic department are in the early stages of ACSA application, with plenty of opportunities for the right candidate to be involved in pathway development, guideline writing, perioperative management, quality improvement and research. There will be plenty of opportunities to present work locally and nationally. We would support the fellow in being our resident ACSA lead, working with the department to progress our ACSA application.

There will be regular mentored sessions within our high-quality preoperative assessment, seeing patients for a range of surgeries including head and neck, dental, complex plastics and ophthalmology. The fellow will also be involved with the multidisciplinary team and shared decision-making clinics. With experience the fellow will be encouraged to practice consultant level independent clinics, with the support of department.

The fellow would be expected to participate in the registrar oncall rota (1 in 8), LTFT working will be supported. Pay will be in line with current resident pay scales.

Main duties of the job

Queen Victoria Hospital are offering a perioperative fellow post for 12 months, or 6 months if can be attached to a 6-month SIA at QVH. This post would be suitable for a registrar during stage 3 of the curriculum who would like to experience and develop their perioperative medicine skills.

The department has expertise in a number of areas including complex airway management, hypotensive anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia including the use of nerve catheters, total intravenous anaesthesia and sedation techniques.

QVH receives 7-8 ST5-7 anaesthetic trainees from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex, and South East Schools of Anaesthesia every six months, and is a very popular rotation. The clinical fellow will form part of this group of trainees. A well-established tutorial programme including a cadaveric regional anaesthesia course is provided alongside clinical teaching. Protected teaching time is provided for this. You will be allocated an educational supervisor for the duration of the fellowship.

The post will be of 6 - 12 months duration commencing August 2026. 12 months is preferable, as it enables projects to be developed, but candidates wishing for a six month post are welcome to apply. It is a suitable post for a post FRCA trainee (ST5 and above) wishing to take an OOPE, and for a post CCT trainee wishing to gain further clinical experience prior to a consultant appointment.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will join the full shift rota with the StR(H) trainees which includes prospective cover for colleagues study/annual leave. Rota patterns can be subject to change according to the exigencies of the service and should they do so we will consult with you. The rota provides a balanced mix of training lists and on call commitments, plus 2 hours of SpA (supporting professional activity) time per week. The fellow post also includes up to one day per week for project time. The on call duties include providing anaesthesia for emergency work, and resident cover for the Critical Care Unit. The Critical Care Unit is a 5 bedded unit that predominantly provides level 2 and 3 care for post operative major head and neck patients, and burns patients.
