Job summary

The Queen Victoria Hospital is one of the largest plastic surgery units in the country, serving a population of over 4 million people in the South East and for certain services, nationally. It has an international reputation for delivering high quality, innovative care in many areas.

The Burns Service provides acute and reconstructive care for the population of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and South London. It is the sole provider of such care in the region. It is part of the wider London & South East Burns Network. In addition to treating 2000 adults and children with acute burns it also has a multidisciplinary scar and reconstruction service for those patients who need expert scar treatment.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our Burns team, as part of our new Laser service which manages burn scarring.

You will be patient focused and willing to learn all aspects of burns and skin loss wound management to ensure our patients are seen in a timely, friendly environment. The Laser service is a new service currently in development and you will be provided with all the relevant training for this aspect of the role.

Main duties of the job

At the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, an exciting opportunity has arisen within our burns team for a Band 3 Health Care Assistant.

This specialist department assesses and treats minor to moderate burns and skin loss injuries, whilst managing follow-ups and admissions from external referrers. We are also developing a new laser service for the treatment of burns scarring.

An enthusiastic and self-motivated person is required to provide clinical healthcare support to the staff nurses within our burn's outpatients department and the Advanced Clinical Practitioners who deliver the laser service. The role gives the opportunity to work as part of a dedicated and busy clinical team whilst developing yourself and others in delivering a high standard of clinical care.

Clinical Responsibilities

To prepare clinic rooms in preparation for receiving patients

Assist to ensure the department is restocked and have shared responsibility for maintaining the cleaning of clinical areas

The post holder will be required to work as part of a skilled team to support the provision of an effective and safe clinical service

Work as part of a team under supervision to provide a safe, effective environment of care for patients, relatives and their carers. Under direction of a registered practitioner, to support a comprehensive level of care, maintaining high standards and continuity of care to patients

Support the registered practitioner in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care

Under the direction of a registered practitioner, undertake a range of delegated clinical duties including record keeping, patient observations, specimen handling and participate in wound care

Under the direction of the registered practitioner check sterilised equipment, ensuring related paperwork is in order and completed correctly

To assist in ensuring all written documentation is completed, i.e. Patient care plans and charts

Use the Patient Centre system for relevant purposes

Assist with the provision of the day-to-day management of clinical equipment and report any problems to senior colleagues, completing the necessary documentation

Communicate with colleagues, patients and their relatives/ carers in a professional and compassionate manner. To escalate any concerns about a patient to the relevant practitioner immediately

Assist patients with activities of daily living whilst ensuring the privacy and dignity of the patient is maintained at all times, for example chaperoning, emotional and physical support, overcoming barriers to communication

Ensure patients, visitors and staff are dealt with sensitively and professionally with due regard to ethnic origin, culture, religion, disability and sexual orientation

Acting as a positive role model for peers, supporting other HCAs as required

Maintain professionalism at all times and respect colleagues

To deal with queries and problems from patients and staff, both on the telephone and personally, in a positive and helpful manner and escalate as appropriate

Attend department meetings

Ensure a safe environment in the department for patients/staff and visitors and inform the Department Manager/ Nurse in Charge of potential hazards. Comply with COSHH regulation and other Health and Safety legislation

Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and resources

To undertake phlebotomy tasks as required upon completion of the competency

Be able to use any information technology within the department

Training and development will be available for the successful applicant, and you would need to have an Apprenticeship Level 3 or Level 3 Diploma (NVQ) in Health care support or able to demonstrate knowledge within this field through practical experience to be shortlisted for this role.

All training in regards to the laser service/assistance with using the lasers will be provided.
