Job summary
This is a band 5 surgical rotational staff nurse post, that involves 3 rotations throughout Canadian Wing, Head and Neck Unit and the Burns Unit. Each rotation will be 6 months, with the rotational programme being 18 months in total.
You will work closely with all members of the nursing and wider multi disciplinary team to deliver a high standard of care to QVH patients, relatives and carers. Adhering to the NMC code of conduct at all times.
Main duties of the job
The main duties involve being responsible for assessing, planning, implementation and evaluating programmes of care for patients under indirect supervision from senior staff.
You will be working closely with all members of the multi disciplinary teams and so good communication is essential.
All necessary training and education will be provided for you to provide the high standard of care that the QVH prides itself on.

Canadian Wing
Canadian wing is a 43 bedded surgical unit made up of a 19 bedded female ward called Margaret Duncombe and a 24 bedded male ward called Ross Tilley. Margaret Duncombe houses the 4 bedded enhanced recovery unit which is where our breast reconstruction and dental osteotomy patients are cared for post operatively with a greater nurse to patient ratio.
The unit is a diverse unit specialising in hand, maxillofacial, breast reconstruction, and corneal surgeries. We care for both elective and trauma patients meaning that no two days are ever the same.
Canadian Wing is a fast paced unit with lots of opportunities to learn new skills, in a supportive learning environment, regardless of whether you are newly qualified or an experienced nurse. We believe there are always opportunities to learn and enhance your practice. We are a fun dynamic team who strive to do the best for the patients in our care. Burns Unit
The Burns Unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) is a specialist area caring for patients with major and minor burns, also including patient with major skin loss (e.g. Necrotising fasciitis or TENS). We are a dynamic, friendly and motivated Burns Team and our priority is to offer the best holistic care for our patients recovering from a burns injury. As a team we provide specialist advice and support to referring agencies, as well as promoting a consistent approach to management of patients with a burn injury across the London and South East Burns Network (LSEBN). Within this service we offer psychological support and work closely with physiotherapy and occupational therapy team to provide rehabilitation for patients recovering from major burn injury. We comprise of a 6 bedded Ward, 2 rehabilitation flats and a Burns Outpatients Clinic. As part of the Burns Team you will rotate through the Burns ward and Burns Outpatients giving you the opportunity to experience the burns service entirely.
We lead a variety of specialist nurse led treatments including enzymatic debridement, sharps debridement and allograft application. We are proud of the learning opportunities available within our department, and we are happy to support newly qualified nurses with successful completion of your training. Our training includes ward and Trust based teaching, opportunities to attend Seminars and the BBA British Burns Association conferences. We offer an extensive training programme to develop our Burns Specialist Nurses, this consists of our in house Burns competencies, Burns Management Study Day which can then progress to the Advanced Burn Care Modules level 6 and 7 and Emergency Management of Severe Burns course (EMSB).
Head and Neck Unit
The Head and Neck Unit is an 8 bedded acute surgical ward that specialises in head and neck cancer and maxillofacial surgery.
You will be caring for surgical patients pre and post-operatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will gain skills in airway management including caring for tracheostomy and laryngectomy patients, enhanced post-op recovery, wound management, surgical flaps and drains and administration of enteral nutrition and medication for patients with NGTs, PEGs and RIGs. The successful candidate will be motivated and enthusiastic to learn and willing to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
We are committed to providing education opportunities to all our staff and we place a strong emphasis on the education and development of the ward team. There are opportunities to complete in-house study days in tracheostomy and laryngectomy care, enteral nutrition and osteotomy surgery.
