Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join the Site Practitioner team at the QVH in East Grinstead.

  • Management of the Trust site 24/7 ensuring Trust policy and procedures are adhered to, dealing with any incidents and issues as and when they occur, liaising with the on-call manager as necessary.
  • Receive, triage and record all trauma referral calls and actively manage the trauma theatre list.
  • Part of Outreach team and Medical Emergency Team.
  • At night lead and co-ordinate the Hospital at Night Team. Provide first line clinical input for all areas where patient issues arise, liaising with clinical staff during normal working hours or other members of the Hospital at Night team at night.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring high standards of patient care, cleanliness and hygiene.

Main duties of the job

The role is comprised of two parts:

  • Site Practitioner -Have responsibility for the management of the Trust site 24/7 ensuring Trust policy and procedures are adhered to, dealing with any incidents and issues as and when they occur, liaising with the on-call manager as necessary.
  • Trauma Co-ordinator -Receive, triage and record all Maxillary Facial and Plastics trauma referral calls into the organisation and actively manage the trauma theatre list.

Both roles take responsibility for ensuring high standards of patient care, cleanliness and hygiene and for promoting a culture of caring, kindness and compassion, providing support to all staff members 24/7.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • To work within a multidisciplinary team to identify patients at risk of developing critical illness, enabling early intervention and transfer to a suitable area to care for the patients individual needs.
  • To provide expert clinical support to staff throughout the Trust and ensure these skills are delivered to the patient.
  • To provide clinical and professional support and advice to all nursing staff, and work clinically along side junior nursing staff as necessary.
  • To co-ordinate emergency transfers out to alternative services and record appropriately
  • To act as the lead in any arrest call event until the arrival of medical support; and continue to lead where you are the most senior qualified member of staff present.
  • To promote evidence based care for patients hospital wide
  • To work closely with staff within wards, enhanced recovery unit and critical care to facilitate high quality care and ensure excellent communication between all departments and individuals regarding plan of care.
  • To ensure that work is at a standard which demonstrates credibility to the multidisciplinary team.
  • To be seen as a point of contact for nursing staff for operational and clinical concerns.
  • Is pre-emptive in dealing with issues as they arise and will monitor standards of quality and cleanliness in conjunction with the Matrons.
  • Work collaboratively alongside the multidisciplinary team providing care for patients.

Managerial

  • To fulfil the role of hospital bleep holder with the freedom to act according to service needs. Liaise with on call managers when required ensuring they are updated with relevant issues.
  • To act as a credible leader within the Trust.
  • Initiate and develop ideas for the improvement of critical care services in consultation with other disciplines.
  • Contribute to the operational management of the hospital and attend meetings as necessary.
  • To work collaboratively with managers and matrons, ensuring information is recorded contemporaneously and passed to appropriate individuals for action.
  • Be responsible for the managerial lead in all non-clinical emergencies including fire, flooding, major incidents and untoward incidents.
  • To actively contribute to the Trusts bed management process and ensure the Trusts bed stock is utilised as efficiently as possible and if required to arbitrate. To manage bed stock during the out of hours period.
  • Attend meetings as appropriate.
  • Be responsible for carrying out audit as required and ensure results are shared as required.
  • Be responsible for carrying out the level of care audit as deemed necessary by the critical care network.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring the Patient Safety First audit is carried out on a weekly basis
  • Take responsibility for ensuring Safe Staffing audit is carried out on a daily basis
  • Be accountable for and contribute to development and maintenance of critical care outreach policies in conjunction with site management matron.
