Surgical Directorate
The surgical directorate consists of General Surgery including Colorectal, Breast, Paediatric Surgery and performs laparoscopic surgery, ENT, Urology and Orthopaedics.
Facilities in the Specialty
There are 10 main theatres and four day case units. The Surgical Department has 85 emergency and elective beds and 11 children's emergency and elective beds. We have a separate Endoscopy unit that has JAG accreditation.
The SpR will check the admissions and treatments giving advice and arranging treatment or
operation after consulting the Registrar or Consultant concerned. The SpR will normally seek
advice from his/her Consultant before referring patients to other specialties.
The SPR is responsible for all the patients under the care of the Consultant Surgeon(s) to
whose firm they are attached at the time and for the patients of all the Consultant Surgeons
when 'on-call' and when covering for their colleagues. The SpR will refer to thier
Consultant when problems exceed their authority and experience and they will support and
advise the House Surgeon who will refer to them.
The SpR must maintain liaison between other SPRs who are on duty before and after him/her to maintain adequate continuity and communication of patient care. The SpR is responsible for arranging the patients' care, ordering their treatment and investigations. They will instruct the nursing staff in the care of patients and the technical and professional staff in the investigations that are necessary for patient care, taking care to make sure other departments are fully informed of all necessary information.
On-Call Duties
This is a 1 in 11/12 Full Shift rota. The SPR must be resident at Medway Maritime Hospital
when on nights.
