Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to be an expert and leader in the interpretation and explanation of medicines use and expenditure data in order to optimise the use of medicines across the organisation. They will also contribute to the medicines optimisation agenda across the ICP and ICB. They will work to implement the principles of medicine optimisation to improve the clinical effectiveness of treatment and improve patient outcomes. They will also ensure financial stability in the use of medicines in the organisation.

This position will develop and manage a rolling cross-cutting programme of medicines efficiencies in specific drug lines by working with key stakeholders across the organisation to identify, track and report medicine efficiencies.

Medicines Optimisation:

To lead the pharmacy medicines optimisation team, currently consisting of a principal pharmacy technician - medicines optimisation and performance management and a senior pharmacy technician high cost drugs and cancer services.

To develop a vision and strategic direction and lead on the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of long-term strategies, operational policies and standards relating to medicines optimisation.

To lead the cross-cutting medicines efficiency programme for the Trust; identifying, facilitating, tracking and reporting medicine efficiencies. To highlight and explore schemes that are underperforming and bring them back on track where possible.

To work with senior medical, nursing, pharmacy and managerial staff to interrogate and report on medicines usage and expenditure data for their care groups so they can provide data-driven and evidence basedreporting on top medicines expenditure and changes in expenditure.

To work with medical, nursing, pharmacy and managerial staff to horizon scan for potential changes in medicines expenditure and the impact on individual drug budgets as a result of changes in drug usage, service developments, new formulations, and updated national, region and local guidance.

General:

Provide effective and enabling leadership across teams and contribute to the culture of leadership promoting equality and the value of diversity.

Responsible for contributing to a positive, safe, supportive and equitable team culture where all team members have a voice and the values and behaviours of the Trust are evident.

Deputise for the Chief Pharmacist and Deputy Chief Pharmacist, representing the Trust in external networks, influencing, contributing to and maintaining awareness of national and regional clinical pharmacy strategies, policies, standards and changes in political agendas.

Essential

  • Master's degree in pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate diploma in a relevant Pharmacy discipline (eg Clinical, General Pharmacy Practice).
  • Specialist higher degree or portfolio of experience at senior managerial level.
  • Professional Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council.

Desirable

  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of the requirements of national organisations involved in clinical pharmacy e.g. DoH, RPS, UKCPA
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems (e.g. CMM/Ascribe)
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Ability to apply abstract and sometimes contradictory data to practice.

Experience

  • Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of pharmacy to achieve cross -Trust developments.
