The Cardiac Catheterisation Service at Medway NHS Foundation Trust is an excellent and well established service. We provide diagnostic Coronary Angiography via both femoral and radial approaches, and device implantation. We work in close partnership with St Thomas's Hospitals - several of our Consultants having joint posts with the tertiary centre.We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual, to join the team and work alongside the Senior Cath Lab Sister within the Cardiac Catheter Lab environment.
Main duties of the job
Carry out planned care for a group of patients with support from senior staff
Recognise when changes in patients condition occur and take appropriate action including reporting to the nurse in charge
Assist in carrying out extended roles under supervision to ensure best clinical practice, this includes: - acting as a scrub or circulating nurse to assist the doctor during invasive cardiac procedures, which include coronary angiography, pacemaker implant, PCI, and other complex cardiac invasive procedures.
Able to perform venepuncture and cannulation following appropriate training.
Assist in the safe transfer of critically ill patients
Assist and advise support staff in the delivery of patient care
Able to remove both venous and arterial sheaths following appropriate training and supervision.
Maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly and appropriately, this includes specific post procedural observations i.e. limb observations and wound site inspection.
Undertake nursing procedures following best practice
Have responsibility for the correct administration and storage of medicines according to Trust policy
Monitor patients progress, work towards safe and timely transfer to either CCU, ward area and ensure barriers to discharge are identified and acted on appropriately

The post holder is responsible for assessment of care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for being in charge of the ward and supervising junior members of staff.
The post holder will be a key member in relation to the development of practice on the ward. They will be working independently / autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles
To care for all patients undergoing any interventional Cardiology Unit procedure and to implement treatment prescribed by medical staff, according to departmental policies. This requires:
Maintaining accurate and legible records of care
Knowledge and understanding of ones role in an emergency situation and acting appropriately.
Preparing and Laying up sterile trolleys for specific procedures and completing daily safety checks of stock and equipment.
Competence at removal of arterial/venous sheath and managing haemostasis with arterial closure device.
To have specific knowledge about pacemaker leads and modes of pacing
Knowledge in the management of temporary pacemakers, threshold measurement and safe removal of temporary pacing leads
To assist the operator during cardiac catherisation and devices implants
Understanding of cardiac rhythms and the significance of changes
Knowledge of the intravenous and intra coronary drugs administered both routinely and in emergency situations and to prepare the same
Dexterity to manipulate guide wires, balloon catheters, pressure wires, inflators.
Knowledge of a variety of catheters, guide wires and balloon catheters and their use in different circumstances
Recognising and understanding of disease of the coronary arteries, identified via angiographic evidence with the ability to follow the procedures and take appropriate action.
To carry out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles in conjunction with the second person in accordance with the local policy and maintain the highest standard of asepsis both in the preparation for and the duration of the procedure
Maintain and protect the safety, confidentiality and dignity of patient and their families, offering support and reassurance patient during the procedure
