Main duties of the job

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Counsellor with a passion to support our cancer patients and their families. The post holder will inspire and improve the development of the psychosocial services across Medway and Swale.

The post holder will work closely with a range of specialist nurses in cancer, haematology, palliative and end of life care within the trust, including the medical and surgical wards to provide counselling and emotional support according to need.

The Macmillan Counsellor will be a member of the psychosocial team working closely with the cancer specific tumour teams, along with the wider multidisciplinary team and organisation, providing expert practice, education, specialist advice to support the safe, effective and high-quality care of patients affected by psychosocial concerns.

To act as a psychosocial expert and professional resource for patients, carers and health care professionals Trust wide to embed psychosocial support through timely and equitable access integrated with cancer and clinical pathways. Offering a range of assessment and therapeutic strategies to meet the need of the population which include patients, relatives and carers.

The successful post holder will provide confidential, professional specialist counselling and psychosocial support for people with cancer and their families following a diagnosis of cancer and the impact this has on their lives.

The post holder will need to have experience working with people who have a high level of complex needs. They will need to have an in-depth knowledge of psychological techniques and counselling skills.
