Main duties of the job

This is a new fixed term neonatal consultant post to enable compliance with CNST recommendations. The appointee will join the existing eight consultant neonatologists. The post is based on The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital. The neonatal unit is a fully recognised tertiary medical neonatal referral centre with full supporting staff. We operate as part of Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) Operational Delivery Network.

The new consultant will have leadership responsibility to progress governance within the neonatal department, and a clinical neonatal sub-speciality interest which would complement those areas already covered by the current consultants. An interest in neonatal respiratory conditions will be a welcome addition to the existing expertise within the team. The post holder will lead clinically on all aspects of infant and neonatal respiratory conditions. This includes supporting the development of clinical guidelines in neonatal respiratory care and introducing a care bundle to reduce BPD in preterm babies. All consultants are actively involved in research projects that are undertaken on the unit. Educational supervision of junior doctors/ANNP is shared between consultants.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent
  • CCST/CCT in Neonatology or Paediatrics with a Special Interest in Neonatology (or will obtain within 6 months of interview date)
  • IELTS (Academic) level 7.5, or graduate of a Medical School in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, USA or Canada

Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical Governance principles
  • Good understanding of the impact of early supported nutrition in neonatal outcomes

Experience

Essential

  • At least 2 years training in years ST6-8 in a UK neonatal intensive care unit, or equivalent overseas if recognised for OOP
  • Evidence of advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine
