Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities

Clinical:

• Provide advanced Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management for complex cases across core and subspecialty clinics, including strabismus, neuroophthalmology, paediatrics, orbital, toxin and A&E.
• Lead the Orthopticled OMG clinic, independently reviewing, prioritising and managing suspected and confirmed OMG patients, and collaborating with the medical team for shared decisionmaking.
• Contribute to multidisciplinary clinics providing specialist Orthoptic expertise.
• Work autonomously at network sites, taking full responsibility for patient management, triage and referral.
• Prepare and assist with botulinum toxin and post surgery adjustable orthoptic assessment where required.
• Identify pre/postoperative risks, provide patient counselling, and appropriate onward referral

Communication and MDT working

• Communicate complex clinical information sensitively to patients, families and carers.
• Provide clear written documentation and correspondence in line with Trust standards.
• Liaise with consultants, optometrists, nurses, family support teams and safeguarding services to ensure coordinated patient care.
• Contribute expert Orthoptic opinion in multidisciplinary discussions.

Education, Supervision and Leadership

• Supervise and mentor undergraduate orthoptic students, new graduates and junior staff across the network.
• Provide teaching to medical staff, optometrists and AHPs as required.
• Act as a role model for advanced clinical practice, supporting the professional development of the Orthoptic team.
• Promote and advocate for the Orthopticled OMG service at regional and national level.

Service Development, Governance and audit

• Lead ongoing development of the OMG pathway, ensuring highquality, evidencebased care.
• Lead annual audit cycles for the OMG service and contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in the design and implementation of SOPs, care pathways and service evaluation.
• Support departmental and Trust governance activities, including CPD, strabismus service monthly teach and clinical governance sessions.

Administration and Operational Duties

• Support departmental organisation to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
• Participate in data collection, outcome monitoring and activity reporting.
• Contribute to rota flexibility and crosssite cover as required.

Professional Development

• Maintain HCPC registration and a portfolio of CPD aligned with BIOS guidance.
• Engage in reflective practice and ongoing professional education to maintain advanced skills.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

• HCPC registration as an orthoptist
• Knowledge of data protection
• BIOS clinical tutors course
• higher level qualification specific to neuro opthhalmology
• Recognised UK degree in Orthoptics

Experience

Essential

• significant clinical experience including sub-speciality clinics
• experience working in clinics with complex motility
• experience of providing undergraduate supervision
• experience of leading a service

Desirable

• experience working in tertiary referral centre

Knowledge

Essential

• evidence of CPD and reflective practice gained through variety of resources
• knowledge of clinical governance
• active involvement in audit

Desirable

• Active participate in BIOS CAG group neuro-oph

Skills and abilities

Essential

• Excellent written and verbal communication

Desirable

• Experience of developing SOP
