Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated Orthoptist to join our high-performing Orthoptic Service at Moorfields Hospital, London. The successful postholder will be pivotal in leading our unique Orthoptic-led ocular myasthenia service and contribute to a broad range of Orthoptic and consultant-led clinics. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within a nationally recognised unit. We are looking for a clinician with strong clinical reasoning and a commitment to multi-disciplinary team working.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Manage a diverse, core and complex Orthoptic clinical assessment and decision-making across core and specialist clinics
  • Lead and further develop the Orthoptic-led ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) service, providing expert input for both suspected and confirmed cases in close collaboration with the medical team
  • Drive continuous improvement of the OMG pathway, including leading annual audit cycles and championing the role and service regionally and nationally
  • Contribute to service development within the wider Orthoptic team, supporting high-quality, patient centred care
  • Support Moorfields' role as a centre for excellence by supervising, mentoring and teaching students and other healthcare professionals , modelling advanced Orthoptic practice and professional leadership.

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Provide advanced Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management for complex cases across core and subspecialty clinics, including strabismus, neuroophthalmology, paediatrics, orbital, toxin and A&E.
  • Lead the Orthopticled OMG clinic, independently reviewing, prioritising and managing suspected and confirmed OMG patients, and collaborating with the medical team for shared decisionmaking.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary clinics providing specialist Orthoptic expertise.
  • Work autonomously at network sites, taking full responsibility for patient management, triage and referral.
  • Prepare and assist with botulinum toxin and post surgery adjustable orthoptic assessment where required.
  • Identify pre/postoperative risks, provide patient counselling, and appropriate onward referral

Communication and MDT working

  • Communicate complex clinical information sensitively to patients, families and carers.
  • Provide clear written documentation and correspondence in line with Trust standards.
  • Liaise with consultants, optometrists, nurses, family support teams and safeguarding services to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Contribute expert Orthoptic opinion in multidisciplinary discussions.

Education, Supervision and Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate orthoptic students, new graduates and junior staff across the network.
  • Provide teaching to medical staff, optometrists and AHPs as required.
  • Act as a role model for advanced clinical practice, supporting the professional development of the Orthoptic team.
  • Promote and advocate for the Orthopticled OMG service at regional and national level.

Service Development, Governance and audit

  • Lead ongoing development of the OMG pathway, ensuring highquality, evidencebased care.
  • Lead annual audit cycles for the OMG service and contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of SOPs, care pathways and service evaluation.
  • Support departmental and Trust governance activities, including CPD, strabismus service monthly teach and clinical governance sessions.

Administration and Operational Duties

  • Support departmental organisation to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
  • Participate in data collection, outcome monitoring and activity reporting.
  • Contribute to rota flexibility and crosssite cover as required.

Professional Development

  • Maintain HCPC registration and a portfolio of CPD aligned with BIOS guidance.
  • Engage in reflective practice and ongoing professional education to maintain advanced skills.
