Locum Consultant Pathologist - Eye Pathology

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Histopathologist to join the team at the Moorfields Department of Eye Pathology, initially on a 6 month locum contract.

The department is part of the National Specialist Ophthalmic Pathology Service (NSOPS), and receives a wide range of qualifying ophthalmic samples as well as serving Private practice, Research and Charitable causes.

This challenging role would suit a dynamic and organised individual who is looking to expand their knowledge in this field, whilst bringing suitable transferrable skills and new ideas with them. Ophthalmic pathology includes elements of dermatopathology and neuropathology along with lymphoma/lymphoreticular; specific training will be given to the successful candidate both locally and with input from the other NSOPS centres. Participation in the Ophthalmic EQA organised by the British Association of Ophthalmic Pathologists would be a requirement once training is complete.

Acknowledging the Highly Specialised workload of the Department, we are open to flexible working, where job sharing, remote reporting, targeted sessions and/or part time appointments may be of benefit for candidates who wish to retain an interest elsewhere.

Main duties of the job

This is a 6 month Locum post offering 8 Programmed Activities. There is no formal on-call or weekend working commitment.

The post holder will provide high quality diagnostic ophthalmic pathology reporting. In addition, there is teaching and supervision of junior and non-medical staff, both visiting and permanent.

It is expected that the post holder will participate in management and service planning. Supporting professional activities include MDT, teaching, CPD, audit and appraisal.

Job responsibilities

Diagnostic clinical service

Duties include:

Performing, supervising and evaluating macroscopic dissection of ophthalmic pathology specimens

Generating reports on diagnostic cases

Referring cases externally for opinions and ancillary investigations as needed, and integrating the information received with the original diagnostic report

Communicating with patient-facing and other colleagues as need arises

Attending relevant multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including preparation and follow-up

Contribute to and undertake IQC and relevant clinical audits as needed

Working in line with relevant health and safety processes.

Work with the laboratory manager to deliver and improve the service

Participation in service improvement projects

Professional development

Duties include:

Undertaking relevant CPD and similar activities as they arise

Maintaining knowledge of current practice by reading, courses etc.

Participating in the Ophthalmic Pathology National External Quality Assurance Scheme (NEQAS) as well as any other relevant EQA schemes

Participating in the British Association for Ophthalmic Pathology annual meetings

Undertaking annual appraisal

Research, teaching and audit

The post holder may have an honorary or associate appointment at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, depending on research and teaching activities.

Duties include:

As appropriate, teaching of staff in the Department of Eye Pathology, colleagues from UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and visitors from other sites

Research support and collaborations as mutually agreed between the post holder and other parties

Participating in the Department of Eye Pathologys service audits

Essential

FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification.
MBBS/MB ChB or equivalent
Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. oApplicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
