If yes, then Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust welcomes applications for the new created role of MSc practice educator on the UCL MSc Orthoptic (pre-reg) programme, working within an expanding multi-disciplinary team.

The MSc Orthoptics programme has been developed by University College London (UCL), Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in a joint education partnership. The post holder will hold an honorary contract with UCL IoO and be employed by Moorfields Orthoptic Service.

This is a unique opportunity to support the MSc Orthoptics (pre-reg) programme alongside UCL Institute of Ophthalmology suite of ophthalmic sub-specialty taught programmes. The practice educator will play a key role in the development of the clinical education resources for programme.

Main duties of the job

This is a key role to ensure students are supported across the duration of their studies to develop core Orthoptic knowledge, skills and behaviours, across academic and clinical teaching (e.g. lectures, clinical skills labs and tutorials) and assessment (preparing assessments/rubrics and marking/feedback).

Job description

Job responsibilities

Ensure the effective and efficient delivery, assessment, and on-going development of the programme.

Bring to the attention of the Programme Leads any concerns relating to the students clinical work or general welfare.

Leadership

To support and coordinate learning activities and assessment to HCPC requirements aligned with the Intended Learning Outcomes.

To lead curriculum module review and on-going development.

To work collaboratively with the MSc Programme Leads, Module Leads and Head of Orthoptics at MEH as clinical partner on behalf of the Trust.

To engage in appropriate scholarship in your discipline to support excellent in research and evidence-based teaching within the MSc (pre-registration) programme.

Education

Curriculum (in consultation with co-programme Leads):

To coordinate and contribute to Orthoptic-led teaching, and developing the module syllabus; ensuring the content aligns with the core curriculum and the Intended Learning Outcomes set out in the Curriculum Map.

To ensure the development and provision of core course material for the module is up to date and contributing authors align to the curriculum map, including on-line resources and e-learning.

Prepare high quality teaching materials for tutorials, communication with students to develop critical thinking and practical skills.

Forwarding tutorial / workshop activities to the Programmes dedicated Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator.

Provide a title and brief description of the tutorial / workshop content (for use in the Student Handbook, Moodle pages and websites etc.).

For tutorial compile a reading list of essential /required readings and additional reading in standard reference format and submit these to the Librarian and the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator to be updated annually by mid-July.

Ensure all teaching materials, student exercises and student attendance lists/registers etc. are forwarded to the Programmes dedicated Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator for filing.

Collect clinical data and build simulation resources for the BIOS Hub/PERL.

Support clinical and academic supervision and tutoring on students on the programme, as directed by Programme Leads.Provide pastoral support role for students, such as acting as personal tutor and clinical link tutor and UCL tripartite tutor duties.

Promote the development of excellence in learning and teaching through personal scholarly activity.

Support CPD and knowledge exchange activity.

Assessment

Deliver assessment with awareness of local processes for assessment and marking (incl. second marking, moderation, feedback and external examiner role/responsibilities).

Work with Programme Leads and other Module Leads to determine the content of written, practical and clinical assessment aligned with the intended learning outcomes set out in the curriculum map.

Participate in writing and reviewing assessment materials for formative and summative written, practical and clinical examinations and to ensure participation by module teachers.

Participate in practical and clinical assessments and marking and to ensure participation by module leads and assist with marking for other modules.

Co-ordinate module assessments and course work.

Provide constructive written and oral feedback on formative and summative assessment for students to the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator in the format and timescale within one calendar month of submission (in line with the UCL Academic Manual regulation).

Quality Assurance

Actively engage in appropriate training and development to comply with mandatory requirements and sustain excellence in teaching activity.

To respond to issues raised through UCL quality monitoring and assurance mechanisms to ensure appropriate follow up action. This includes but is not exclusive to course evaluation, responding to feedback, implementing innovations. Engagement with development groups/exam board/external examiner and respond to external audits, reviews and assessment.

To support educational appraisal.

Student Feedback

Ensure the content of student feedback forms about the module is correct and that these are distributed to students in good time.

Review student feedback, meet with the Course Tutors (and other Module staff if necessary) to discuss student feedback and compile a response to students.
