Job summary

The post will suit a person wishing to develop a career in clinical research as they will attain cutting-edge experience of how to run a clinical translational research. The successful candidate will be bright, independent and highly motivated, but willing and able to work effectively as part of a team.

The post-holder will be based in the Clinical Research Facility at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He/she will acquire expertise in the use and interpretation of a range of psychophysical assessments including microperimetry and detailed colour vision assessments, and imaging studies including fundus photography, autofluorescence imaging, and high-resolution optical coherence tomography. Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to:

  • Collect clinical data (including history, examination findings, any investigations) and collate in a custom-designed database.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the research team and clinical
  • Recruit and co-ordinate patients for a clinical trials
  • Organise, maintain and analyse project data
  • Data analysis to understand the genotype-phenotype correlations
  • Responsibility for clinical data management and liaison with the lead investigator
  • Active participation in other ongoing research projects
  • Achieve goals, agreed in discussions with their line manager
  • Present the results of the project in national and international meetings
  • Prepare the results of the project for publication
  • Perform any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post, the title of the post and its grading as requested by their line manager
  • Undertake patient and public involvement exercises to promote the disease and the research

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be part of an innovative research team led by Professor Lyndon da Cruz, Professor of Retinal and Stem cell transplantation surgery at UCL and Consultant Ophthalmologist in the Vitreoretinal Surgery Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The principle aim for this post will be to facilitate research in cell transplantation for retinal and macular degenerations. They will also work on the integration of cell delivery systems with innovative robotic surgical devices to add precision to retinal cell transplantation.

He/she will have the opportunity to publish scientific papers, and potentially register for a higher degree such as a PhD at UCL with full academic support. In addition, the post-holder will also have exposure to Vitreoretinal clinics and the VR operating theatres though there is no surgical training or operating associated with this position.

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the research team and clinical
  • Recruit and co-ordinate patients for a clinical trial if necessary

  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings
  • Active participation in other ongoing research projects

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • FRCOphth
  • Full GMC Registration (with a Licence to Practice) or be eligible for GMC Registration.

Desirable

  • Ophthalmology research experience

  • Completion of Specialist Ophthalmology Training or Equivalent.
