Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Anaesthetist

The closing date is 12 June 2025

Job summary

We are Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Founded in 1804, Moorfields Eye Hospital is a world-class centre of excellence for eye health services, ophthalmic research, and education.

With more than 2,300 staff we are proud to be supported by one of the most diverse workforces in the NHS. Every year we treat more than 700,000 patients at City Road in central London and at our 22 satellites sites, and, in partnership with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre we lead one of the most impactful ophthalmic research programmes in the world.

We train many of the leading eye care clinicians in the UK and internationally and have a global reputation for quality and professionalism in ophthalmic care. In addition, we also operate commercial divisions that provide care to private patients in both London and the Middle East.

If you want to be part delivering world class eye health services and you share our values: excellence, equity, and kindness, then we would love to hear from you!

The consultants provide a comprehensive anaesthetic service to the main Moorfields hospital at City Road and a variable degree of support to a number of satellites in the London area. Direct care sessions include operating lists and pre-assessment clinics.

Main duties of the job

The consultants have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, and for the proper functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to, and training for, junior staff. The post holders are expected to maintain an efficient service, maximizing use of theatre time and working flexibly to ensure the smooth running of the operating department.

All members of the consultant staff and honorary consultants are expected to contribute to the MedicalAdvisory Committee and to serve on other Hospital committees as required unless compelling reasons prevent this. All members of the consultant staff will be expected to participate in audit meetings.

All members of Consultant staff are expected to participate in clinical governance and audit, to meet annual training requirements, and to satisfy the annual requirement for continuous professional development set out by The Royal College of Anaesthetists. All consultant staff will participate in the Trust's appraisal scheme.

Operating theatres are normally closed between 21.00 - 08.30 weekdays, and between 18.00 - 08.30 at weekends.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The posts are based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, including the City Rd site and a number of satellites based in and around London.

The full time job plan comprises 10 PAs: 7 regular DCC sessions and 3 SPA sessions (currently the ratio between the DCC and SPA is under negotiation with the Trust, and maybe subject to change).

The post holders will be expected to work flexibly to facilitate service provision when colleagues are absent, including staffing the satellite units. The case mix encompasses extremes of age, with pediatric cases down to 4 weeks, and elderly patients with numerous comorbidities.

The vast majority of our work is day case, although a small number of adult patients remain in hospital overnight. Many patients undergo surgery with local anaesthesia. The lack of many services that would be found in a general hospital means that the anaesthetic service is more than usually relied upon for perioperative patient care.

In addition to clinical duties, the new appointee would be expected to participate in departmental activities including management, teaching and audit.

The JD is awaiting approval from the Royal College of Anaesthetist.
