Job summary

Main duties of the job

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) will work as part of the paediatric department team in the Richard Desmond Children's Eye Centre (RDCEC) under the supervision of registered nurses and will participate in the delivery of family centred care, contribute to paediatric organisation, give support to paediatric and ophthalmic nurses in the provision of a safe and caring environment to children and their families and assist with the induction, supervision and training of other HCA's.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be responsible supporting the clinical team in providing quality care to our patients who present with a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions and maintaining a safe, clean environment.

In addition the successful candidate will work alongside paediatric ophthalmic nurses to undertake venepuncture on paediatric patients and their families as required in the RDCEC paediatric outpatient clinics, A&E and the surgical day care ward. Appropriate training and supervision will be given to the successful applicant to enable the HCA to reach the required level of competence to take responsibility for specific tasks and services delegated by the nurse in charge or in accordance with agreed policies and protocols.

The HCA will work closely with the play staff to ensure that paediatric patients undergoing venepuncture or other procedures are comfortable and supported.

The post holder will establish and maintain good working relationships at all times with patients, families and staff of all disciplines, liaise with members of the clerical team and communicate well with all team members.

The post holder is expected to order and re-stock consumables ensuring that there is sufficient quantity available for use.

The candidate's shift patterns is Monday to Friday.

The successful applicant will have completed NVQ Level 3 or equivalent and will need to demonstrate they have worked in a clinical/similar setting.
