Job summary
TheBand 3 Ophthalmic Technician in Outpatient Private Services plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care by performing a range of diagnostic tests and supporting clinicians in outpatient ophthalmic clinics. This role involves assisting with patient assessments, maintaining ophthalmic equipment, and ensuring the smooth flow of private patient services. The technician will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, providing excellent customer service to enhance the patient experience. A strong emphasis is placed on accuracy, professionalism, and adherence to clinical protocols while maintaining a patient-centered approach.
Main duties of the job
- Perform a wide range of Ophthalmic diagnostic tests
- Assist clinicians in outpatient clinics, preparing patients for examinations and procedures.
- Ensure accurate documentation and entry of patient data into electronic health records and paper documentation.
- Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic equipment, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
- Support patient flow by directing and escorting patients within the clinic.
- Provide clear patient instructions and reassurance regarding tests and procedures.
- Adhere to infection control, health & safety, and patient confidentiality policies.
- Participate in ongoing training and development to enhance skills and competencies.

Clinical Duties:
- Perform ophthalmic diagnostic tests including, but not limited to:
- Visual acuity assessments
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans
- Humphrey visual field tests
- Anterior and posterior segment imaging
- Corneal topography and biometry measurements
- Pachymetry , IOP check (ORA & Icare)
- Assist consultant inoutpatient consultations and intravitreal injectionsensuring a smooth clinical workflow.
- Provide pre- and post-procedure patient instructions, ensuring they understand the tests and expected outcomes.
- Ensure accurate documentation of patient data into electronic health records and clinical management systems.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and ensure all clinical areas and equipment are cleaned and maintained to a high standard.
- Ensure correct handling and calibration of ophthalmic equipment, reporting any faults to senior staff.
Patient Care & Customer Service: - Offer a patient-centered approach, providing reassurance and support to private patients throughout their clinical journey.
- Act as a key point of contact for patients, addressing queries regarding tests and procedures professionally.
- Assist in managing patient flow, ensuring minimal waiting times and an efficient clinic operation.
- Support consultants and nurses in delivering personalized care to meet the expectations of private patients.
Administrative & Organisational Responsibilities: - Ensure timely and accurate documentation of test results, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
- Support stock control by monitoring and replenishing clinical supplies in consultation rooms.
- Work closely with the Private Outpatient Clinic administrative team to ensure an efficient patient journey from arrival to discharge.
Professional Development & Compliance: - Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments to stay up to date with advancements in ophthalmic technology and techniques.
- Attend team meetings and training sessions to contribute to service improvements.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures, including infection prevention, health and safety, and data protection guidelines.
- Maintain a professional demeanor, ensuring compliance with the private patient service standards and expectations.
