Job summary

The content of the Medical Retina Clinical Research Fellowship in the Medical Retinal Service will be divided into clinical and research responsibilities determined by participants in clinical trials supervised by Catherine Egan and Adnan Tufail (consultant ophthalmologists in the medical retina service

Main duties of the job

The Fellow will be invited to joint authorship on this research and be expected to develop both their clinical and research skills in the post. The clinical sessions will be undertaken in clinics organised by the Medical Retinal Service. The post is 50% to support MacTel research sponsored by the Lowy Medical Research Institute. A proven record of clinical experience at a subspecialty level in medical retina, data analysis, retinal image analysis and publication will be required and will be expected to develop during the fellowship. The successful applicant will have the required medical license to practice in the UK with the General Medical Council (GMC), a valid visa to work in the UK and evidence of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training in order to see patients and work in a clinical research environment at Moorfields.

Job description

Job responsibilities

A minimum of 1 honorary clinical sessions in medical retina clinics to identify and recruit participants for the international MacTel registry study (1 for MacTel) and other retinal disease

A minimum of 4 research or administration sessions for MacTel related studies this will vary from week to week, but will include recruitment and study visits in the clinical trials unit for the MacTel registry study and associated MacTel clinical trials or associated studies, including but not limited to retinal image analysis, visual function testing, large scale data analysis projects related to retinal disease and attendance at the 2 required laboratory meetings each week (Prof Marcus Fruttiger laboratory UCL and Prof Aaron Lee laboratory, University of Washington). Image or data analysis and participation in writing groups for publications for this work will be expected. Ad hoc and by arrangement: 1 honorary clinical session per week with Prof Adnan Tufail. This may include a medical retina clinic, or an intravitreal injection list , or a cataract surgery list to aid recruitment for approved studies in diabetic retinopathy or AMD where relevant to MacTel research e.g. as control participants or for the collection of biosamples relevant to MacTel research

Attendance at regular MR Fellows Teaching Sessions (typically 6, 1-hour sessions per week, including Fluorescein Angiography Meeting, Electrophysiology Teaching, Uveitis Teaching and Clinical / Research Tutorials) is expected

Continuous professional development (CPD) in medical retina and uveitis is expected

Evidence of GCP (good clinical practice) certification is expected.
