Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist optometrist to join our optometry team in Moorfields South. There are part-time fixed term sessional vacancies at our St. George's site on Tuesday and Wednesday in medical retina, external eye disease, glaucoma and contact lens services.Moorfields Eye Hospital is a post-graduate teaching Hospital of international acclaim, dedicated to excellence in patient care, training and research. Our main site is at City Road, London but we have a large, and growing, number of interdisciplinary satellite clinics at which optometric services are provided.The Optometry Department has expanded rapidly with increasing extended role activities across Moorfields' sites. The Optometry Department has over 160 optometrists and provides clinical services for refraction, low vision assessment, medical contact lenses as well as extended role. We play a significant role in the training of ophthalmic professionals and in collaboration with UCL our optometry education has recently expanded to provide College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications. Our research priorities reflect the developing role of optometrists and our close links with the Institute of Ophthalmology. We are supported by our spectacle and contact lens laboratories.

Main duties of the job

To undertake specialist clinical activity; this activity requires regular use of a range of advanced clinical techniques requiring dexterity and concentration. These clinics involve responsibility for clinical decision-making with support from consultants and the provision of specialised diagnosis, management, care and education of patients.To provide a clinical opinion or obtain a clinical opinion from consultant colleagues to optometric and non-optometric colleagues on the management of patients.

Essential

  • Competent use of a slit-lamp to examine the anterior and posterior eye with specialist lenses
  • Competent performance of retinoscopy
  • Ability to analyse and interpret ocular imaging e.g. OCT, visual fields, topography to an advanced clinical level e.g diagnosis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

Desirable

  • Excellent written communication skills including the ability to write clinical summaries, referral letters, reports, papers
  • Ability to identify service improvement needs
  • Good interpersonal skills highlighting the complexity of multidisciplinary team working, in challenging work environments, and the overall needs of the service
  • Ability to sensitively communicate complex information in a range of situations e.g. clinical information to patients, unwelcome & bad news.
