Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time permanent Consultant Optometrist to jointly lead the Contact Lens Service. They will be required to lead an expanding department that provides contact lens patient care and involve a broad range of complex, non-routine and comprehensive optometric work of a specialised nature within the medical contact lens and external disease field.

The post holder will have clinical responsibility for the patients seen within in the contact lens clinics. The post holder will work closely with consultant & principal optometrists and the Head of Department to actively participate in ongoing development of the Hospital's External Disease and Optometry Services.

The post holder will be responsible for the training and supervision of new department members and be responsible for creating and updating patient management clinical guidance and protocols.

Main duties of the job

To lead an expanding department that provides Contact lens patient care , involving a broad range of complex, non-routine and comprehensive optometric work of a specialised nature across all sites.

To be the named Consultant, responsible for contact lens service patients at all sites with clinical responsibility for the patients seen in the contact lens clinic.

To be responsible for development and administration of the contact lens department

To actively participate in ongoing development of the Hospital's External Disease and Optometry Services by close interaction with External disease-specialist consultant ophthalmologists and Head/Deputy Head of Optometry and divisional leads.

To be responsible for the training and supervision of new department members.

Responsible for creating and updating patient management clinical guidance and protocols.

Take responsibility for and develop the contact lens clinic structure, appointments, clinic profiles and booking summaries.

Provide advice on contact lens management to ophthalmic consultants, other ophthalmic colleagues and other hospitals.

To undertake national representation to the College of Optometrists, the British Contact Lens Association and other organisations.

To provide line management for optometry department staff working within the Contact Lens Service.

To ensure the Trusts appraisal system is employed & identify the training and development needs of optometrists and supplementary staff within the Contact Lens Service.

To assist in the recruitment of Optometrists to work in all sites within the Contact Lens Service and participate in recruitment processes within the department.

To manage and develop the contact lens manufacturing department within the Trust, including dealing with business development of the contact lens manufacturing lab.

To manage the contact lens Quality Control and Orders Section.

To manage the contact lens component of the department orders system (Acuitas) and the Contact Lens Clinic database

To manage the correspondence, telephone queries and complaints relating to the Contact Lens Service.
