Consultant in Accident & Emergency & Undergraduate Medical Education Lead for A&E

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Ophthalmologist to join the Moorfields Accident and Emergency and Medical Education teams. This post will have direct responsibility for leading undergraduate medical education for emergency ophthalmology as well as direct clinical sessions within A&E.

This is a permanent role offering 5 programmed activities to provide direct clinical care within the A&E service, 1.5 PAs to provide medical education responsibilities and 2.2 SPAs.

The post holder must have PGCert in Medical Education, either completed or underway. They will need to have experience in the management of emergency ophthalmology presentations and a proven track record of developing teaching and training programmes and providing excellence in education.

The Trust has excellent private patient facilities both at City Rd and in central London. This affords Moorfields Consultants the opportunity to develop a private practice. The Moorfields Private team will be delighted to discuss this further with the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

Duties within A&E will include management of urgent cases presenting to the service; supervision of junior staff and participation in informal and formal teaching.

The postholder will be responsible for the educational needs of undergraduate medical students in line with RCOphth ophthalmology curricula as well as postgraduate learners and other groups such as trainees and physician associates.

Job responsibilities

Duties will include:

  • Management of urgent cases presenting
  • Supervision of junior staff in the service and participation in informal and formal teaching
  • Development of the Nurse practitioner role
  • Support to triage, assessment and Urgent Care Clinic
  • There is no on-call commitment for A&E
  • Postholder will be responsible for the educational needs of:
  • Undergraduate medical students (years 2-6) in line with the universities and RCOphth ophthalmology curricula.
  • Postgraduate learners in the early years (Foundation Doctors, GPs)

Teaching of other student / learner groups will also be required including but not limited to ophthalmology trainees, MSc students, Physician Associates etc.

Teaching Duties (undergraduate and postgraduate):

  1. Preparation and delivery of all teaching material (lectures/ seminars / Ophthalmology e-learning / web sites) as required.
  2. Preparation, development and upkeep of teaching material (including websites), and equipment.
  3. Preparation and delivery of ophthalmic courses for students and learners.
  4. Feedback collection, and evaluation. Acting on feedback in timely manner.
  5. Audit of teaching processes. Audit / Quality Improvement Projects into Education / Training methods
  6. Undertaking presenting and publishing education research
  7. Student projects, supervision and feedback,
  8. Assessment of coursework and dissertations
  9. Mentoring of students in preparing course work, abstracts posters, publications
  10. Identifying underperforming learners, and offering additional teaching
  11. Mandatory attendance at weekly Education (MEWS) meetings
  12. Mandatory attendance and highly active contributory role in the running of the Moorfields Academy.
  13. Identifying patients suitable for teaching. Building up a database of (suitably consented) patients suitable for teaching / exams/ educational projects / web based e-learning projects.
  14. Attending University, Medical school and RSM open days, career events and committee meetings.
  15. Liaison with Consultant staff, fellows from other subspecialties and nursing staff in the clinics and wards.
  16. Examining students at medical school entry, OSCEs, Vivas, etc.

  • FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
  • Full GMC registration (with a 'Licence to Practise').
  • Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within six months of entry.

  • Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).
