Job summary

The Institute of Ophthalmology National Specialist Ophthalmic Pathology Service (NSOPS) is moving over to be hosted by Moorfields on the 1st September 2023. Providing histopathology services, along with 3 other labs across the country (Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield). The move allows for the combining of Moorfields Eye Bank, Moorfields Pathology and the NSOP service to align our first-class clinical and research pathology services. This transfer provides a strong nationally and internationally recognised identity for eye pathology services. and ensure preparation for further demand growth, emerging digital innovation and the provision of training and development of future pathologists and scientific and technical staff with an interest in eye pathology.

Main duties of the job

Along with providing expert histopathological examination of biopsy material the post holder will have protected time to conduct a strategic review and propose a service strategy to deliver the best future model for the provision of pathology services at Moorfields including opportunities for increasing commercial activity, research activity, private patient activity and Trust to Trust opportunities for the newly amalgamated services.

Job responsibilities

To provide 2 clinical pathology sessions and 2 sessions per week to deliver a strategic review and service strategy plan.

The Strategic Lead will support the integration and ongoing development of the new Eye Pathology Service. The service integrates the Moorfields pathology services, Moorfields Lion Eye Bank and the department of eye pathology currently hosted by the Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO). The aim of this re-structure is to align the first-class clinical and research pathology services into Moorfields as we prepare to move to Oriel, and to provide a strong nationally and internationally recognised identity for eye pathology services.

Along with the Head of Life Sciences the Medical Lead will conduct a service strategy review to determine the best future model for the provision of pathology services. Part of this will be to ensure delivery of a modernised the eye pathology service including and prepare for further demand growth, emerging digital innovation and the provision of training and development of future pathologists and scientific and technical staff with an interest in eye pathology.

As part of the strategic review the lead will look to see if there are any commercial and research opportunities that align with MEH strategic themes that provide income. They would provide national and international leadership with regards AI, genomics, provider to provider developments, and integrated pathology unit for eye care along with other potential opportunities looking forward to Oriel.

Part of this will be to prepare for further demand growth, emerging digital innovation and the provision of training and development of future pathologists and scientific and technical staff.

The lead will support NSOPS to become embedded within the Moorfields pathology umbrella, working alongside the Head of Life Sciences.
