Job summary
This post is for a Consultant Neurologist to support and develop the highly specialist neuro-ophthalmology clinic, combining the fields of neurology and ophthalmology, and often dealing with complex systemic diseases that have manifestations in the visual system.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be responsible for Neuro-Ophthalmology clinics at St George's Moorfields sites. Duties will include but not be limited to: weekly outpatient Neuro-Ophthalmology clinics; advice, triage and assessment of urgent neuro-ophthalmology cases or inpatients. Development of remote neuro-ophthalmology clinics and carrying out disc clinic. Other associated admin work; attending neuro-radiology MDTs; liaising with neurologists/neurosurgeons/endocrinologists and others in the care of patients; supervising and training Fellows, Trainees and Allied Health Professionals; providing departmental teaching. Note there is no surgical component to this post.
All the services are fully supported by orthoptists.

The Neuro-Ophthalmology service at Moorfields South manages the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients with a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic conditions at both Moorfields St Georges and Moorfields Croydon. These patients often have sight- or life-threating diagnoses, including brain tumours. They require Consultant level input into most aspects of their care. There is a need for access to emergency Neuro-Ophthalmic assessment at both sites, across the week, including requests for assessment on neurology and neuro-surgery inpatients.
At both sites, the neuro-ophthalmology service is run in close collaboration with the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery. The neurology and neuro-surgery department at St Georges is one of the largest in London, with 33 Consultants providing tertiary neuroscience care to a regional population of approximately 3 million in South West London, Surrey and Sussex. St Georges also houses the Regional Head Injury Service and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, providing specialist stroke services to the population of South West London.

Essential
- MRCPH (UK) or postgraduate medical qualification
- CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
- Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.
- Full GMC Registration (with a 'Licence to Practise').
Desirable
- Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).
Further Training and Knowledge
Essential
- One year of fellowship training in Neuro-ophthalmology or equivalent subspecialist experience, with experience in management of neuro-ophthalmic conditions such as raised intracranial pressure, neuromuscular conditions, neuroinflammation.
- Be near to OR completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
- Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
Desirable
- Experience at Consultant level in neuro-ophthalmology
