Job summary

Medical Retina Clinical Fellowship - City Road

The content of the Clinical Fellowship in the Medical Retinal Service at City Road will be divided into 3 x fixed rotations. Each rotation has been designed with particular bias to a sub-specialty of the medical retina service. Fellows will be invited to select their top 6 rotations based on their particular interests and the service will set their 12 month fellowship based on the three out of the six chosen timetables. The clinical sessions will be undertaken in clinics organised by the Medical Retinal Service.

The clinical fellowship in the Moorfields will combine further uveitis and medical retina clinic experience.

Main duties of the job

May vary, as outlined above, but will also include:

  • 8 clinical sessions and 2 research / study / admin sessions in a Monday to Friday working week. Out of the 8 clinical sessions, all fellows are required to undertake 2 service sessions per week, which includes Primary Care session in Medical Retina, Medical Retina Emergency clinic and intravitreal injection
  • Some of the clinical sessions (at least once a week) will take place in the Moorfields Satellite sites based outside City Road.
  • Attendance at regular MR Fellows Teaching Sessions (typically 6, 1-hour sessions per week, including Fluorescein Angiography Meeting, Electrophysiology Teaching, Uveitis Teaching and Clinical / Research Tutorials).
  • Cataract surgery is not part of the Medical Retina fellowship-training programme; however there may infrequently be opportunities to operate during the 12-month period.

About us

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MEH) is one of the world's leading eye hospitals, providing expertise in clinical care, research and education. We have provided excellence in eye care for more than 200 years and we continue to be at the forefront of new breakthroughs and developments. We are an integral part of one of the UK's first academic health science centres, UCL Partners, and were one of the first foundation trusts established in the NHS.

Our main focus is the treatment and care of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions which require treatments not available anywhere else in the UK. The unique case-mix and volume of our large service means that our ophthalmologists can develop expertise in different sub-speciality areas.

Moorfields is also a major postgraduate teaching centre and a national centre for ophthalmic research and, with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, provides the largest ophthalmic research programme in the world. We continue to make headlines with our ground-breaking research and, along with our partners at the Institute, we have the highest measure of scientific productivity and impact in the world for our research activity. We are one of only 11 sites nationally to be awarded National Institute for Health Research biomedical research centre status for translational research. This has recently been renewed for another 5 years with a substantial increase in research funding.
