There is currently an exciting opportunity for dynamic and motivated registered nurses to join the multidisciplinary team in our busy ophthalmic A&E department.

As a department, we are dedicated to the development of a strong nursing team ready for the future. We are fully committed to nurses' personal development and training needs. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to attend further studies in ophthalmic care. We welcome applications from newly qualified nurses as the trust offers a comprehensive preceptorship program. Our A&E team provide emergency treatment for urgent, sight-threatening problems for around 100,000 patients a year.

Successful candidates will assess, care for and support patients through their A&E journey. The A&E department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so shift work including some night duty is a requirement of these posts.

Main duties of the job

At times they will have management responsibility for the co-ordination of teams within the A&E department and General ophthalmology clinic and the supervision and education of junior members of staff. They will ensure that all patients are seen and assessed by members of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be a key member of staff, participating in the development of care for patients attending the Accident and Emergency service. They will work independently/autonomously and are accountable for their own professional actions. They are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, always ensuring that the care they provide is compassionate and safeguards the dignity and well- being of all patients.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

This post will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

During the probationary period, your suitability for continued employment will be assessed and provided a satisfactory standard is achieved and maintained, your employment will be confirmed. The probationary period may be extended or your employment terminated either during or at the end of probation, in line with the trust Probationary Policy. For the duration of the probation period, the notice period will be in line with contractual obligations on either side.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for the assessment, management and care of patients in the Accident and Emergency and General Ophthalmology service. They will assess patients and implement and evaluate treatment provision ensuring that the care provided is consistent and of a high standard throughout the patient care pathway. Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within the A&E service, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided throughout the patient pathway.

Work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve and maintain all targets and measures both local and national that are relevant to the A&E and General Ophthalmology service.

Responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Act as an advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within relevant guidelines.

Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

Recognise the significance of observations made and use them to develop and initiate nursing assessments and management of the patient in the outpatient setting.

Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a persons care requirements.

Carry out ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.

Take a clear and concise history from patients, assessing their health and well-being by carrying out relevant tests. Complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.

Undertake full patient ophthalmic evaluation by carrying out assessment of visual acuity, assessment of pupil function, assessment of ocular structures and eye health using the slit lamp and measurement of intra ocular pressure using appropriate equipment and instrumentation. Document all findings and results using trust systems.

Be responsible for the correct and timely administration and where required supply of prescribed medication.

Be accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and taking every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence. Act in accordance with local, hospital and statutory guidelines and policies including health and safety initiatives.

Compile a personal & professional portfolio in conjunction with the performance management process and the compilation of a Personal Development Plan.

Maintain a high standard of care and always remain courteous to all patients, carers, visitors, colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner being aware of budgetary constraints and the requirement to manage resources efficiently and effectively.

Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors, and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safely, security and risk.

Provide specialised advice concerning the care and treatment of identified groups or categories of ophthalmic patients/clients.

Communicate effectively and efficiently with all members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patient care.

Communicate with patients and relatives, making reports and liaising as appropriate with medical staff other members of the care team and management.

Report to the Doctor/Sister/Charge Nurse and members of the multidisciplinary team on patients conditions, both verbally and in writing as required.

Attend and participate in department meetings and help promote new ideas and methods and assist in their implementation.
