Cancer Services Manager

Job summary

The Cancer Service Manager leads the Trust's delivery of the national Cancer Agenda, working with Trust leadership and Cancer Alliance partners to ensure cancer waiting time standards are met. The postholder provides expert advice on pathway improvement, oversees validation of performance data in line with national guidance, and ensures an effective business model is in place to support the Trust's cancer strategy.

They provide strategic and operational leadership to the Cancer Pathway Team, ensuring a robust infrastructure that supports high-quality cancer services and compliance with national and local objectives, including COSD requirements.

The role works closely with senior cancer leaders to implement the Trust's cancer strategy, support MDTs, and ensure equitable, high-quality care across all pathways. The postholder also drives service improvement programmes aligned to national and regional priorities, delivering efficiency and quality improvements. Patient involvement and co-production are embedded wherever new pathways or processes are developed.

Main duties of the job

Leadership and Management

To undertake first line management of the Cancer Data Capture Systems Manager, FDS Manager, Cancer Services Team Leaders. Cancer Management Team PA and oversee management of Cancer MDT co-ordinators & the Cancer Tracking/Performance Team prioritising work of the team to ensure performance indicators are met, delegating duties where needed.

To promote a high-performance culture and ensure that all staff in the Cancer Pathway Team are fully aware of the obligations and adhere to Trusts policies and procedures and have the ability to take remedial action, eg. Performance management and disciplinary action as appropriate.

To ensure the Cancer Pathway Team are prepared to respond to the change of service needs and Cancer Waiting Times targets.

Ensure there are effective communication systems across the Cancer Pathway Team to ensure that there is a free flow of information to maintain a co-ordinated approach to service delivery.

Ability to work with a wide and varied staff group to persuade, advise and negotiate change.

Ability to resolve conflict and influence positive outcomes for delivery of effective treatment and care.

Deputise for the Head of Cancer Services where required.

Creation of a culture where staff are actively involved in the decisions on how services are provided, improved and standards delivered.
