Locally Employed Doctor in General Surgery ST1-2

Job summary

We are currently seeking to employ x2 full-time Locally Employed Doctors at ST1-2 equivalent level with experience in General Surgery.

x1 Post 6 Months (commence August 2025)

x1 Post 12 Months (commence September 2025)

The posts will be based in General Surgery team based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary but will involve working on other sites occasionally.

The posts are intended to participate in an internal basic surgical training rotation to allow enthusiastic and committed surgical trainees to achieve their competencies to be able to apply for formal surgical training. The posts will be based in one of the four general surgical sub-specialties at the trust (GI surgery, vascular, breast and urology) with the ability to rotate to other specialties for a minimum of six months to gain the necessary experience.

The post holders will take part in the general surgery resident on call rota at core trainee level. The DRI rota is a 1:15 covering acute general/GI surgery, urology, vascular and breast patients. There is a Higher Specialty Trainee, Foundation Year 1 Doctor and a consultant on call at all times. There are separate consultants on call and free of elective commitments for general/GI, vascular and urology.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take part in daily ward rounds within their appointed specialty, perform duties on the ward and assist in elective theatres/clinics. There will be opportunity for emergency and elective training and career progression. The post holders will have an assigned educational supervisor and are expected to engage with the ISCP portfolio. The post holders will have opportunity to attend educational sessions and will be expected to attend governance sessions.

The successful candidates are expected to be familiarise themselves with the local policies and procedures and take note of the standing orders and financial instructions of the trust

The post holders will undertake, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances and also be available for such irregular commitment outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care and the management of the directorate services.

  • Managing a whole spectrum of surgical patients
  • Assistance and supervision of the F1 doctors with the management of patients as appropriate.
  • Strengthening the delivery of a high-quality surgical service across the hospital and community.
  • Developing innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high quality care.
  • Teaching and training undergraduates as well as postgraduates
  • Quality assurance of the service and individual practice
