Job summary

Applications are invited from enthusiastic Specialist Doctor Grades. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 years' medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades or equivalent level.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has produced statement for reinstatement of the Associate Specialist grade or equivalent in September 2018. Following negotiations with the NHS Employers and the BMA the Specialist grade was introduced in April 2021 in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

In recognition of the fundamental role that SAS doctors hold in the delivery of high quality, safe medical care for patients, a charter for staff, associate specialist and specialty doctors was published in England. Similar charters jointly produced by the BMA and the NHS in the devolved nations have also been accepted.

The successful candidate will contribute to urgent & emergency care across the Urgent & Emergency Care Group, and will work as a part of the Urgent & Emergency Department team with a full shift rota.

Please note this position is based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary however includes cross site working meaning the successful candidate will be expected to pick up shifts at our Bassetlaw Site.

Main duties of the job

Managing a whole spectrum of emergency patients

Assistance and supervision of the F1, F2 and GPST doctors with the management of patients.

Strengthening the delivery of a high-quality Emergency Medicine service across the hospital and community.

Developing further links between Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine

Developing innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high quality care.

  • Developing a subspecialty interest.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBchB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years' medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
  • Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practise.
  • Must meet the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework
  • FRCEM or equivalent achieved
  • ALS (or equivalent)
  • EPALS / PALS (or equivalent)
  • ATLS / ETC (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Emergency Medicine at a standard capable of leading the department overnight (EPIC)
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role

Desirable

  • Minimum 6 months UK NHS Emergency Department working experience
