Job summary
We are looking to recruit New to Care (apprentice) Healthcare Assistants to a number of ward areas across DBTH. You will learn new skills, gain a health care qualification, meet amazing colleagues/patients all whilst making a difference caring for people within your local community.
Our HCAs provide some of the most personal and fundamental support to our patients so if you are kind, compassionate and you always act in the best interests of others, then we want to hear from you.
Whether you have previous care experience or not, we will develop you and your skills to allow to thrive within out busy hospital. We offer various career pathways, in depth induction training, and continuous support throughout your journey with us.
We have full time and part time roles available, and also support flexible working where possible. The minimum hours for this role are 30 hours per week due to requirement of undertaking an apprenticeship. There is a variety of shift patterns, including a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern (rotational shifts, with enhanced pay for weekends and nights).

Please also note that if you are on a visa, your visa must have 15 months as a minimum left to the expiry date from your start date. You must have also been living in the UK for a minimum of 3 years to meet the entry requirements for the course.
Main duties of the job
You will work alongside nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide a positive experience to our patients and their relatives at times of need. You will support patients in various ways such as:
- washing and dressing
- toileting
- bed making
- serving patients meals/assisting with feeding
- helping people to mobilise
- assisting with patients' overall comfort
- monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight - national early warning scores (NEWS)
- providing encouragement to lifestyle and behaviour changes
It's really important to consider that some aspects of healthcare work can be distressing and unpleasant. You will be expected to help patients with personal care without being embarrassed or feeling awkward. You will need to be able to communicate sympathetically with patients, and distressed relatives, and care for patients who are very sick.
If you are already an NHS employee and are applying for an Apprentice - Annex 21 vacancy you may be entitled to pay protection.
Pay protection applies where the role you are applying for is at the same AFC band or higher, and you would receive less in pay compared with your current salary due to annex 21.
