Job summary

This is a newly created Band 7 Specialist Post. There are two additional Band 7 Specialist Critical Care and Acute Respiratory SLTs who have already been recruited to this team and there is recruitment underway for a Band 6 Critical Care SLT.

You will join a newly funded and AHP MDT for Critical Care and Acute Respiratory services.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist assessment, treatment, management & advice, within an MDT setting, for Acute Respiratory and Critical Care SLT inpatients across two sites.

To support provision of assessment, treatment, management & advice for patients within other acute inpatient areas including acute, stroke, elderly, surgical, respiratory & medicine when required and if needed (eg cover of annual leave or sickness absence) across two sites.

Provide leadership for your team in planning, co-ordinating, delivering & evaluating the SLT service provided to Acute Respiratory and Critical Care SLT patients across-site & maintaining equity of service.

To provide a lead role in teaching, supervising & appraising Band 6 SLT peer where applicable.

To deputise in the absence of the Adult SLT Professional Lead & Adult SLT Clinical Team Lead as required in both management & clinical areas.

To undertake supervision, mentoring & performance development plans to promote clinical & professional effectiveness of self & others. This includes performance management & any management of disciplinary issues in liaison with the Adult SLT Professional Lead.

Provide Videofluoroscopy services to the wider Adult SLT Team where applicable

Provide FEES services where applicable, both on Critical Care and in other areas of the FEES Service.

To provide Critical Care and Acute Respiratory CPD for the wider SLT team.

  • Training in wide range of communication assessments and therapies ranging from disorders of consciousness to high level disorders, including a wide knowledge of appropriate low and high level AAC
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Advanced Dysphagia training in management of Primary Respiratory Dysphagia (dysphagia arising from dyspnoea secondary to a primary lung health issue, eg; COPD, Lung Ca, Pneumonia, Pulmonary Fibrosis), Respiratory Component Dysphagia (dysphagia arising from dyspnoea secondary to a non-primary lung health issue, in absence of laryngeal hypersensitivity eg CCF, Oncology treatments, Neuromuscular disorders and Laryngeal Sensitivity (reflux) Dysphagia (dysphagia with dyspnoea related to laryngeal sensitivity changes, may be associated with reflux.
