Job summary

Phlebotomist within Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Phlebotomy Department.

This post is to predominantly work on the Bassetlaw site but there is a requirement to work across sites if and when required.

To enhance the quality of patient care by the collection of good quality blood samples which are suitable for analysis. The post holder will demonstrate empathy and sensitivity to the patient, while taking into account individual patient management needs.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Phlebotomist within Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Phlebotomy Department.

Various part-time hours available

Applicants must be prepared to work on a rota basis between the hours of 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday; and 07:00 to 11:00 Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.

As a suitably trained individual, you will work in busy, modern outpatient departments and on the hospital wards. The Phlebotomy team uses an electronic requesting system to manage phlebotomy episodes therefore IT / keyboard skills are essential.

Absolute attention to detail and infection control awareness is crucial, together with good communication and team-working skills. Previous phlebotomy experience would be an advantage, and full training will be given to enable access to electronic requesting.

About us

Candidates will be expected to work on the three hospital sites (Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop and Montagu Hospital Mexborough) and the Drive through services offered by the Trust in order to deliver the necessary service.

The Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and innovation in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.

You will liaise with other professionals such as medical staff and nurses.

You will exercise specialist expertise and techniques when obtaining blood from children or from intensively cared for patients who may be on monitors, drips, oxygen or other specialist equipment.

You will be expected to take blood from known high risk patients such as intravenous drug abusers, Hepatitis or HIV positive patients.
