Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Speciality Midwifery team for a Fetal Monitoring Specialist Midwife.

The job will be a permanent post. Consideration for part time, job share will be considered.

The successful candidate will have excellent leadership, clinical and presentation skills. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the co-ordination and teaching of evidence based best practice within maternity in collaboration with the Obstetric lead.

The maternity department prides itself on innovation, quality improvement and staff health and wellbeing to enable high quality care to be provided to women and families.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and facilitate a programme aimed to equipment midwives and obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal wellbeing, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making.
  • Develop staffs awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiology (CTG's) and impaired clinical decision making.
  • Ensure staff are assessing fetal wellbeing in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour.
  • Develop midwives competence in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of fetal heart in low risk women as per trust and NICE guidelines
  • Ensure staff can competently auscultate the fetal heart during labour care within the unit and in a home birth setting.
  • Support staff in enhancing their skills in reducing risk within clinical practice
  • Take the lead in supporting the development of a safety culture within the context of resource constraints and multiple conflicting priorities
  • Audit the compliance for the hourly review of fetal wellbeing, assessment of risk factors and process/escalate concerns.
  • Monitoring compliance with annual CTG compliance and intermittent auscultation training for all midwifery and obstetric staff
  • Educate, facilitate and design a teaching programme.
