An exciting opportunity for a Trainee Associate Practitioner post in Cardiology to join our dynamic team of Cardiac Physiologists and Cardio-Respiratory Assistants at Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop. You will be trained to perform routine ambulatory ECG analysis and reporting, assisting in Radionuclide/Exercise Stress Tests and Tilt Tests.
You will work under supervision from cardiac physiologists, whilst undertaking a 24 -27 month training programme at Sheffield College (Healthcare Science Associate - Level 4).
You must hold a minimum of 5 GCSE passes (Grade 5 or above) including Maths, English Language, Dual Science or 2 Science Subjects, and 2 A Level passes (or equivalent), one in a science subject, or equivalent
Candidates will need to be available for a November 2023 start. The post does not guarantee permanent employment, however on successful completion of the Apprenticeship, the qualifications, experience and skills gained provide an opportunity to apply for and/ or progress to substantive roles.
Applicants currently employed in Associate Practitioner roles are welcome to apply, with salary dependent upon skills and experience.
Although based primarily at Bassetlaw Hospital there will be an expectation to cover across sites. Working hours will be subject to review as the service develops, therefore a flexible approach is essential.
Main duties of the job
To achieve, at the end of a training period a recognised level of competency in Cardiac Physiology and a Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate (or equivalent)
To work under the supervision of the work-based supervisor to acquire the technical skills required to achieve competency at the end of the training period. To work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team within the limitations of their role
To perform a limited range of cardiac procedures under the direction of qualified Cardiac Physiologists in order to ensure effective patient diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. These include electrocardiography, ambulatory ECG & BP monitoring/analysis, assistance with Radionuclide/Exercise Stress Testing and Tilt testing (dependent upon site).
The post holder will fulfil the departmental objective of delivering a high quality cardiac diagnostics service to the benefit of patient care using best current practice and to local and national standards.

The postholder will actively contribute to the diagnostic service, which could include any of the following procedures, dependent on their base and/or area of expertise. .At the end of the training period, it is expected that the postholder will be competent in:
To undertake a wide variety of Cardio-Respiratory procedures using analytical skills and equipment.The recording of electrocardiograms (ECGs).Issuing and downloading data from ambulatory ECG/BP monitors and Patient activated loop recorders.Performs analysis and interpretation of routine ambulatory recordings (including 24 Hr ECG, BP and Cardiac Event Recorders).Duties commensurate with being the 2nd person in the Exercise Stress/Tilt testing teams (Physiologist-led, or Doctor-led); including: a) preparation of patient b) preparation of equipment c) operating ECG machine d) recording patients blood pressureMember of the radionuclide stress testing team.Prepare, maintain and troubleshoot equipment as per local procedures whilst ensuring the safe use of these expensive highly complex pieces of equipment by self and others.Daily checks of emergency equipment.Maintain all equipment used to a clean and serviceable standard, reporting faults where necessaryAssist in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the diagnostic testing process.Have occasional direct contact with a variety of body fluids.Under guidance, react promptly to service demands such as clinical emergencies, equipment failure.
Analytical and interpretative responsibilities
Analysis of ambulatory ECG & BP recordings and production of a written factual report under the direction of qualified Cardiac Physiologists. There is a requirement to analyse ECG recordings in detail, in a wide range of different illnesses in order to produce a written report which in turn determines treatment options. Authorisation of these results as appropriate as per departmental local procedures.Provide a factual report for Doctor-led Exercise Stress testsOrganise own tasks on a day to day basis under the guidance of the Cardiac Physiologist.
Teaching & training responsibilities (5%)
To undertake statutory and essential training as appropriate to role (SET)Training and assessment of other healthcare professionals in practical ECG skills using the CCAST toolTeaching, training and supervision of junior Cardio-respiratory staff in procedures appropriate to the roleCompliance with training/education policies of the Department and Care group.CPD will be required as set down by the department and reviewed at annual PDR.
Supervisory, management & administrative duties (5%)
Organise own tasks on a day-to-day basis within the limitations of the roleHandling telephone queriesInput and retrieval of patient information using the CVIS and Sentinel Cardiology Information SystemsUse of the CAMIS system to search for patientsParticipate in stock control and stock rotation highlighting low stocks to relevant Cardiac Physiologist.Filing test reports and distribution of same to appropriate staffFollow local departmental procedures when dealing with enquiries from patients, staff or other agencies.Understand and follow departmental local procedures relating to urgent test requests and reports, ensuring any issues are resolved in a timely manner.Prioritise work to ensure urgent tests are processed according to local procedures.
