Job summary

The post holder will assist the Divisional Nurse in the development of the professional Paediatric and neonatal agenda to achieve consistency of practice, high standards of care and innovation with a strong patient safety focus. Leading the directorate in Clinical Governance and risk management, the post holder will ensure quality assurance, achieving safety and clinical governance objectives within the Directorate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Provide effective leadership and management skills and promote a proactive approach to clinical governance and risk management
  • Initiate strategies to ensure departmental and clinical governance requirements are met and ensure delivery of a quality service.
  • Develop and monitor evidence based practice.
  • To work closely with the matrons, Divisional Nurse and Deputy Divisional Nurse ensuring a seamless service
  • Promote best practice and implementing innovations in care.
  • To support the Senior Management Team in facilitating change as detailed in the Trust and Directorate objectives.
  • To work with the Directorate in meeting its statutory requirements and clinical governance objectives by monitoring and reporting on the progress of achieving compliance i.e. risk management, infection prevention and control, Care Quality Commission standards and regulations, mandatory staff training.
  • To work with the Divisional Nurse and the Senior Team in developing and agreeing CQUINs, Quality Accounts and annual directorate objectives.
  • To be accessible to users of the service, and be a representative for the Division
  • Lead on HSIB reporting
  • Where requested attend complaint meetings
  • To be a highly visible member of the senior team

Professional Responsibilities

  3. To ensure multi-disciplinary clinical audit is embedded at ward level, ensuring that patient care reflects the Trusts quality strategy, and that it meets clinical governance standards
  4. To ensure that all care programmes are accurately documented and that the standard of record keeping reflects the NMC guidelines for records and record keeping
  5. To work with staff to resolve problems for patients and their relatives and facilitate prompt remedial action where this is required supporting staff develop the required skills to manage complaint
  6. To challenge traditional boundaries and introduce new ways of working where applicable.

Management

  1. Lead on risk management including investigating and taking corrective actions, untoward incidents, accidents in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and in collaboration with the Divisional and Trust Governance Leads
  2. To ensure strategies are in place that enable all staff to adhere to Trust policies and procedures at all times. This includes staff compliance of all health and safety policies and the Data Protection Act 1974, which relates to electronically stored personal data
  3. When requested, participate in disciplinary cases, investigating issues/concerns and taking actions as necessary
  4. To develop good working relationships with other wards / departments / agencies within and outside the Trust, ensuring that all stakeholders understand, respect and recognise the Trusts philosophy and operational policies
  5. To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the service to whom patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support
  6. Participate in the corporate development of care, working with the Divisional Nurse, Deputy Divisional Nurse and Matrons to produce lasting and positive change

  3. Assisting in undertaking appropriate investigations of serious incidents and developing action plans where appropriate to support changes in practice
  4. To ensure the Nurse Director and the senior management team are informed of all serious incidents which require investigation in line with Trust policy and report these using the systems in place
  5. To ensure that complaints are dealt with sensitively, within time scales and where appropriate lessons learned are disseminated to promote practice change
  6. To ensure lessons learned from incidents and complaints, and examples of best practice are shared widely
  7. To ensure the departmental training needs are met thus ensuring compliance with national and local standards.
  8. To develop, implement and monitor strategies to ensure standards are met
  9. To ensure that risk management and governance processes are embedded in the directorate cultures
  10. To maintain service delivery and quality standards, whilst ensuring that equipment in service and staff practice comply with health and safety standards at all times, along with the matrons and trust health and Safety leads
