Assistant Healthcare Science Practitioner Blood Sciences

To perform a number of healthcare science clinical, technical or scientific duties required in the analysis of clinical specimens, in order to ensure effective patient diagnosis, monitoring and treatment under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists.

The post holder will fulfil the departmental objective of a good quality analytical and interpretative laboratory service to the benefit of patient care.

An exciting opportunity for a full time Assistant Practitioner has arisen within the Department of Blood Sciences. The role of the Band 3 Assistant Practitioner is crucial to the smooth running of all areas of the laboratory.

Main duties of the job

The job would involve working at Doncaster within the core-automated laboratory and within smaller sections performing manual and semi-automated work. The role would also involve working within the Bassetlaw laboratory.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual to join the team of staff within the department, dedicated to delivering a high quality service to our users. Applicants must an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent e.g. A levels.

The successful candidate will work a variable shift pattern including days, afternoons nights and weekends. They must be flexible, reliable and conscientious in order to meet organisational needs.

About us

The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and wealth in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff. The Transformation Programme may include the consolidation of some services. Staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

Exhibit fine motor skill when performing precision analytical tasks. Some tasks will require excellent hand/eye coordination.

Follow SOP when dealing with enquiries from patients, staff or other agencies.

Understand and follow departmental SOP relating to urgent, incorrectly labelled and problem samples ensuring any issues are resolved in a timely manner.

Undertake a wide variety of automated and manual test procedures referring to Biomedical Scientists when necessary.

Make judgements over a range of facts or situations, which may require analysis over a range of options.

Under guidance, react promptly to service demands such as clinical emergencies, equipment or IT failure.

Perform data entry onto the ISS laboratory computer system ensuring request forms and samples match with each other and information held in healthcare databases.
