Job summary

To undertake rotations across 4 hospital sites in settings which include:Neurology / Stroke, Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Outpatients, Orthopaedics, Acute Respiratory Care (Medical/ Surgical / Critical Care), Paediatrics, Integrated Discharge Team and Community.

To manage a clinical caseload within a defined clinical area working autonomously, but with access to advice/support from senior physiotherapy staff.

Main duties of the job

To provide physiotherapy assessments over a range of conditions, using clinical reasoning skills and techniques to formulate accurate physiotherapy diagnoses.

To contribute to out of hours services.

Good communication skills, and the ability to be flexible are essential.

To participate in the rotational scheme (6 months), which involves working in a range of hospital and community settings across the Health and Social Care Community.

To provide physiotherapy assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients within a variety of clinical areas as an autonomous practitioner.

To manage own clinical caseload, including prioritisation and delegation of work to physiotherapy assistants.

To assist in the organisation and delivery of physiotherapy services.

To be responsible for self-learning/CPD and actively participate in training and development programmes.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

To manage a clinical case load within a defined clinical area working autonomously, but with access to advice/support from senior physiotherapy staff.

To provide physiotherapy assessments over a range of conditions, using clinical reasoning skills and techniques to formulate accurate physiotherapy diagnoses.

To provide health education, health promotion and prevention advice.

To assess patient understanding of assessment and treatment proposals, in accordance with the Consent Policy.

To plan and deliver evidence based physiotherapy treatment programmes, to meet the agreed goals set with the individual patient and/or carer.

To evaluate patient progress, revisit goal setting and alter treatment programmes accordingly.

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication methods to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes.

To overcome barriers to appropriate rehabilitation, including communication difficulties, anxiety or motivation.

To ensure patients privacy and dignity is respected at all times.

To contribute to the safe, timely and appropriate discharge of patients. This may require involvement in a multi-disciplinary/agency approach to discharge planning.

To liaise with other physiotherapists or members of the multi-disciplinary team, to provide information on patient progress. This would include ward meetings, case conferences or case discussions.

To work professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work as an autonomous practitioner.

To maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely patient records in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Standards of Practice and Local Trust and Departmental Guidelines. This will include writing patient specific reports and discharge summaries/letters.

To assess and manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.

To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all medical devices used as part of physiotherapy programmes within the specialty.

To be proactive in the early inclusion of complaints/concerns.

To be an active member in the Out of Normal Working Hours Physiotherapy Service, in accordance with the Physiotherapy Out of Normal Working Hours Policy.

To participate in the on-call rota as an autonomous practitioner, managing acute emergency respiratory patients over a 24 hour period on achievement of clinical competence following postgraduate training and experience.

Education and Development

To teach and contribute to the development of student and assistant physiotherapy staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

To be an active member of in-service training and CPD programmes by attendance at, participation in and delivery of relevant sessions.

Clinical Governance

To be aware and comply with Trust policies appropriate to role and responsibilities.
