Body, Bones and Mind - Paediatric Surgery

CLINICAL FELLOW in PAEDIATRIC SURGERY

We are seeking to appoint Clinical Fellows to a vacancy from April 2026 for 12 months fixed term. Interested candidates are encouraged to complete applications early as this round of applications may close much earlier than the given closing date due to the high volume of applications.

There is an active academic programme, and the format of the post is similar to those currently approved for SpR (StR) training, however, the post does not carry educational approval.

Trust posts are most suitable for candidates who wish to build on previous experience in paediatric surgery by spending a year in a busy clinical and academic department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to participate fully in the clinical work of the department as part of the Departmental rota. This will involve covering fixed clinical commitments; outpatient clinics, operating sessions, ward rounds, clinical meetings and a share of the Emergency and Haematology/Oncology theatre lists as well as being involved in the care of inpatients and contributing to the on-call emergency service operated by the department.

Clinical training will be regarded as a priority. In addition to training provided in clinics and ward rounds other opportunities will be provided by attendance at teaching sessions. There is an induction programme for junior medical staff.

This is a Postgraduate Teaching Hospital. A significant number of medical students, Postgraduate Specialist Registrars in training and Senior Clinical Fellows are attached for varying periods of time for advanced teaching.

There will be at least three hours protected teaching time per week. There are two one-hour teaching sessions on each week focussed on the needs of junior (SHO level) and senior(registrar) trainees in addition to a journal club on a Thursday afternoon.

It is expected that all employees will take part in the regular teaching activities held throughout the hospital and ICH as part of their work while employed by the Trust.
