Trust Doctor in Acute Paediatric Neurology

Job summary

Trust Doctors are required to work at ST2-3 equivalent level in the neuroscience department at Great Ormond Street Hospital. This post is to start in March 2026. The posts will be initially for 3-6 months (to be agreed with successful applicant according to their availability), with the possibility of further 6 months extension.

The individual in this post will be expected to work as part of the neurosciences team and provide care and assessment for acute neurology and neurosurgical in-patients and neurology day-cases. They will also contribute to hospital at night team rota (1 in 20). The children are present with a large miscellany of neurological and neurosurgical disorders. The appointee will gain experience in the management of children pre- and post- neurosurgery, with traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors and complex epilepsy, including epilepsy surgery. They will acquire skills in the assessment, investigation and multidisciplinary management of chronic neurological disorders; and will quickly acquire skills in the assessment, investigation and management of acute neurological disorders such as stroke, encephalitis, seizures and acute motor disorders. In addition, they will learn the assessment and care of children with complex chronic and sometimes degenerative disorders, including genetically-determined and neurometabolic conditions.

Main duties of the job

Day time clinical duties

It is envisaged that the trainee will rotate over a 6-month period equally through the specialties of neurosurgery, acute neurology and planned admissions. The appointee will gain expertise in the management of the acutely sick child with neurosurgical and neurological disease. They will also gain experience in the management of children pre and post neurosurgery, children with genetically determined and neurometabolic conditions, as well as being involved in the care of children admitted on the planned investigation unit. There are close working relationships with the Departments of neuroradiology, interventional radiology, neurophysiology and intra-operative monitoring, neuro-oncology, neuropathology and intensive care. The neurology unit has a number of nurse specialists in Neurology, Epilepsy and Neuromuscular disorders and Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Epilepsy Surgery, Neurovascular disorders and Headache. The neurosurgical unit is the busiest paediatric neurosurgical department in the UK and conducts over 1000 operative procedures annually across all the paediatric sub-specialties.
