Great Ormond Street Hospital invites applicants of ST 2-3 equivalent level for 6-month post in paediatric cardiology.
The post would be well-suited - but not limited - to junior doctors-in-training wanting to have a period of out-of-programme experience. It may be possible to count this placement towards your training, dependent on the completion of Level 1 curriculum competencies. The post is potentially extendable to a maximum of 12 months, if agreed by both parties, following demonstration of acceptable performance in the role, and determination that extension would be beneficial for career progression.
Your main role would be to cover a busy general cardiology ward and cardiology day ward.
During your time, you would also be encouraged to attend all areas of the unit, including cardiac theatres, the catheter laboratory and echo department. There is a formal teaching programme specifically for SHOs, as well as registrar teaching within the department. There are also several courses available, which may be prioritised and subsidised for GOSH staff (including the echo and morphology courses)

Cardiac Unit: General Information
The cardiothoracic unit provides a complete spectrum of medical and surgical services for children with congenital and acquired heart disease. It is a busy unit with excellent results, an international reputation and a commitment to pre-eminence in all aspects of its working including research and development.
The Cardiothoracic Unit houses all the facilities for in-patient medical care and surgery for infants and children with heart disease, mostly congenital and some related disorders. This includes provision for open heart, closed heart and thoracic non-cardiac surgery, as well as heart and heart lung transplantation. Specific departments provide anaesthetic, microbiological, biochemical and radiology supportThe Cardiac Unit is one of the biggest units in the Trust with a budget and allocated medical and nursing staff. The Unit has a cardiology ward, a HDU area, a day care ward and a cardiac intensive care unit. The workload averages some 1400 admissions to the wards, 500 invasive investigations, 11,000 echocardiographic studies, 400 open heart operations, and 300 closed heart and thoracic non-cardiac operations. Approximately one third of the patients are under one year old. There are also transplant cubicles for the heart and heart-lung transplantation programme, which involves approximately 20 patients per year.
