Job summary

Applications are invited for a 10 PA Substantive Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry based within the Dental & Maxillofacial department at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Part time and job share arrangements would be considered and encouraged.

The Maxillofacial and Dental team provide maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services, paediatric dentistry and restorative dentistry for children and teenagers. The department sees over 5000 outpatient and around 300 inpatients per annum, many of whom are under multiple clinical teams because of their complex medical needs. The unit benefits from a recently refurbished, purpose-built suite with 6 clinical rooms. The department has three all day operating lists per week shared between the specialties.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, the largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK.

Main duties of the job

Main duties and responsibilities

Clinical duties include outpatients and inpatient GA treatment lists. Sessions will be dedicated to new patient/review clinics, treatment (with or without inhalation sedation) and theatre lists. The post holder will participate in clinical supervision, support and teaching the junior staff, therapists and hygienists.

Specific clinical duties

  • To provide comprehensive paediatric dental care for appropriate patients, including treatment under local anaesthesia, inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia on an outpatient and inpatient basis.
  • Treatment planning within the multidisciplinary team, with particular liaison with maxillofacial surgical and orthodontic colleagues.
  • Clinical supervision of visiting trainees
  • Attainment of the necessary continuing dental education and professional development criteria.
  • The post holder will be expected to work closely with other members of the maxillofacial and dental team and other key professionals, especially medical, surgical and anaesthetic colleagues with a focus on craniofacial, EB, cardiac and oncology teams.
  • Assessment and triage of new patient referral letters
  • Co-ordinating and helping with expansion of piggyback dental treatment on other operating lists
  • Clinical administration - letters and emails
  • Liaison with other medical teams and departments to promote good oral health
