Job summary
The Occupational Therapy service at Great Ormond Street Hospital have an opportunity available for an experienced paediatric occupational therapist to join us. We are looking for someone to work within our International and Private Care team, providing assessment and intervention for children and young people admitted to the IPC wards with a wide range of complex needs including, but not limited to, neurological difficulties, tumours and oncological conditions, cardiac conditions and neurodevelopmental disabilities. The successful candidate will have experience working with children with complex needs in an acute setting, a thorough understanding of child development, and the ability to communicate the potential impact of acute medical needs on occupational engagement throughout childhood and adolescence.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work with children and young people who are experiencing difficulties engaging in functional activities as a result of their medical condition, associated physical difficulties or disability. They will support patients and their families through therapeutic intervention that ranges from specialist individual and multidisciplinary sessions, equipment provision, targeted education, and universal training. The team are looking for an individual who can promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation within an acute setting.
The post-holder will also have a role in the discharge planning process for children who require long-term support and intervention, working closely with both the MDT and Embassies to enable successful transfers home to the right environment, with the right equipment and support. The ability to assess for and recommend / provide specialist equipment is therefore required. This post requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other professionals and external agencies, including interpreters. A broad knowledge and understanding of Middle Eastern culture would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will work as part of a small IPC team within the department, supported by one Band 6 occupational therapist who also works within the service.
