Advert for Band 5 - Squirrel Gastro
We are looking for nurses who are enthusiastic and well-motivated as we seek to deliver high quality care to our complex Children and Young People on Squirrel Gastro Ward.
Good time management and decision making skills are essential along with an ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The unit encourages staff to develop their leadership skills and clinical knowledge as well as promoting individual development.
Squirrel Gastro Ward is a busy ward with 10 beds, specialising in gastroenterology medicine, both acute and long term management. You will have the opportunity to learn complex fluid management, Parental Nutrition and caring for children undergoing investigations of the GI tract, Pre transplant assessment of children that require Bowel or Multi-visceral transplants and caring for children having complex medication regimes for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. We are a national centre for some conditions and care for children for across the country and occasionally abroad.
We care for a mixture of long and short stay patients, catering for a diverse age range of patients from newborn to 18 years,

Main duties of the job
- To provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times
- To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity
- To ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the children, young people and their families
- To supervise and support members of the ward team as required, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate care
- To ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that multidisciplinary team members are informed of changes in the patient's condition
- To actively assist in the education and practical training of learners and junior staff at every opportunity. To work in co-operation with their university in order to provide uniformity and promotion of professional standards.
- To participate in informal and formal teaching.
- To maintain confidentiality surrounding the child's or young person's admission and treatment at all times.
- To ensure that all patient care is documented, and that all relevant documentation is completed accurately and within agreed timescales using Trust approved documentation, in line with NMC, CQC and Trust standards
