A Band 7 Senior Specialist Healthcare Scientist (HCS) fixed term (2 years) post is available in the Molecular Section of the Specialist IntegratedHaematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS)/Haematology in the Core Clinical Services Directorate. Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It has the largest paediatric Haematology and Oncology centre in Europe.An opportunity has arisen in the Department of Haematology's Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (Molecular section) for a suitably qualified Senior Specialist Healthcare Scientist. This is an excellent post for an enthusiastic and scientifically innovative individual.You must hold a HCPC registration and ideally a PhD in a relevant topic. You must have experience working in a clinical specialist haematology or molecular laboratory, ideally within a paediatric haematology setting.Specialist knowledge of CAR T cell persistence monitoring using digitaldroplet PCR is essential for this role.You will be running specialist assays, training junior staff and will be a link between the relevant research group(s) and the diagnosticlaboratory

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
  • Prioritisation of diagnostic and follow up samples for analysis.

  • Develop and validate sample processing and storage SOPs to maximize number of assays that can applied to a given sample

  • Develop and validate sample processing for scRNseq with a focus on CSF samples

  • To authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis

  • To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turnaround times

  • To take responsibility for the internal quality control and the external quality assessment schemes for designated tests.

  • To assist in the management of the departmental quality systems as directed by the laboratory manager and quality manager.

  • To plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work and staff within a Molecular section of SIHMDS-Haematology in the absence of the Principal Clinical Scientist
  • To keep a check of stocks, reagents and consumables and to order supplies as appropriate.

  • To train and supervise support staff, Trainee Biomedical/Healthcare Scientists and less experienced members of staff.
