Applications are invited for a 2 PA Locum Consultant in Microbiology post based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH).

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our friendly and dynamic team helping us deliver a high-quality diagnostic service in a unique and challenging Paediatric hospital setting. This is a locum post due to partial retirement of a colleague.

The Department of Medical Microbiology is a UKAS ISO 15189 accredited laboratory which provides a full range of high-quality routine and specialist microbiology and virology investigations and clinical advice service, as required for the accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of children with infection, together with a full infection control service for the prevention, investigation and control of health care associated infections in patients and staff. The Department is research active, and engaged in cutting edge translational research bringing novel investigations into routine laboratory service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in the delivery of the comprehensive medical microbiology service at Great Ormond Street Hospital including:

Supervision of laboratory work, directing of appropriate testing and interpretation of diagnostic tests

Authorisation of laboratory results in both Bacteriology and Virology

Liaison with clinical teams concerning all aspects of the diagnosis and management of patients including day to day infection control advice

Attend multidisciplinary meetings as and when required

Attend the joint Infectious Disease and Microbiology ward rounds on Monday (CICU only), Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (PICU, NICU and Neurosurgery plus CICU Thursdays), and Haematology/Oncology BMT ward rounds on Wednesdays during first on clinical service

Facilitate the development and update of antibiotic policies and participate in antimicrobial stewardship programme

Collaborate with Occupational Health in clinical advice on treatment and prevention of infections at work including liaising screening tests

Facilitate investigation and prevention of communicable disease in hospital and the community in collaboration with local and national health protection agencies and Public Health England
