Job summary

GOSH is one of Europe's leading children's hospitals and a centre of excellence for children requiring Long term ventilation (LTV). The LTV Team supports some of the most medically vulnerable patients to improve survival and their quality of life. The team do not just deliver excellent high dependency clinical care but enable children to thrive at home, in school and in their communities. You will work alongside other CNS's in the team providing support to patients requiring NIV and LTV via tracheostomy. The team work alongside many specialities and services within the trust and community setting. As a CNS within the LTV service, you will: - Provide direct patient care, ventilation initiation and ongoing management - Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team across multiple specialities to deliver comprehensive care - Deliver training and education to staff in trust and in the community, patients, families and carers. - Support co-ordination of complex discharges, ensuring smooth transitions of care - Contribute to research service development and the creation of policies to ensure best practice for our patients. GOSH LTV team has one of the largest and most complex cohorts of LTV patients in the country making this a professionally rewarding and unique opportunity.

Main duties of the job

  • The person employed in this post will work closely with the lead consultants for NIV & LTV, the Sleep/non-invasive Fellow and staff in the sleep physiology laboratory. When LTV or NIV is prescribed to support a child
  • preparation for the child and family, with individual support to optimize compliance
  • discuss the principles of NIV or LTV with the child and family
  • provide relevant information and training packages
  • Provide guidance for ward staff on the management for NIV & LTV outside the designated clinical area and ensure this is documented and relevant training and educational packages are in place for these teams. The patients on long term ventilation at GOSH often come from a variety of disciplines within the hospital and repeated admission for investigations and procedures.
  • Education of ward nurses, junior doctors, and sleep technicians in the use of the different ventilators used for LTV/NIV in children
  • Provide robust and standardized education for students, both under and postgraduate e.g., teaching and tutoring in the area of Respiratory Medicine.
  • Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities by keeping up to date with new trends and developments and incorporate them as necessary into your work. To undertake reflective practice and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development in preparation for revalidation
